Post subject: Vonage & Comcast VOIP Can they live together?
I'm moving for the second time in six months ( Sold one house. bought another and renovating a third as rental property). During this chaotic period I signed up for
Vonage
Voip
and a 12-month triple play promotion (cable TV, broadband and
Voip
) from Time Warner ( now Comcast in Houston).
For at least the next few months, it will be cheaper for me to keep both phone services than it would be to cancel one. Long term I plan to keep
Vonage
because I've been much happier with their service/product.
Comcast will be coming over to the new house to transfer (iinstall) service. I've had a structured wiring system put in to the new house. The new wiring consists of a bundle of 2 cat 5e cables and two RG6 (coax) cables to each of 10 rooms. Each line is a home run terminated in a 36" hub cabinet located in a wiring closet. Cabinet is Honeywell (OnQ I believe) with both TV and telephone modules. Have already put in a linksys switch and set up ethernet myself.
Couple questions:
1. Can I use more than one set of the 4 pairs in a single cat 5e cable so that a room has two different phone lines? e.g. the
Vonage
line for voice and the Comcast line for fax
2. How is this config wired?
3. Any other opportunties or cautions I should be thinking about?
Many thanks!

Certainly.

It's standard to use the blue/blue-white pair for line 1 and the orange/orange-white pair for line 2. Which you designate as line 1 and line 2 is up to you. The sticky message at the top of this forum has a lot of information. This link might also help:

You've already done the right thing with the structured wiring. Just try to stick to the standards and you'll be fine.
