Does anyone know if Vonage Talk Alpha works with Windows Vista? I need to know before I purchase my new laptop.
Thanks. |

I haver heard conflicting reports on this. On another forum one person says it works and another says it doesn't.
I use the program, but I don't have Vista running.
If you don't find the answer here, you might have to call Vonage themselves. |

do you mean the Vphone?..if it is, then yes it works great with ultimate, but for other version there is a problem, you need to setup the compatibility mode of your PC. here is the step:
1.)open the removable disk drive.(that's your vphone).expect that you will not see anything.
2.)create a shortcut on your desktop.(lets use E as a drive of your vphone).
-So it will be E:\vonage\autodown.exe
-click next
-then type Vonage Talk (or anything you prefer)
-click finish
3.)right click on the shortcut you made.
4.)click properties
5.)click compatibility tab.And set compatibility to run with windows service pack 2.And click on RUN AS AN ADMINISTRATOR
6.)click on the general tab.And click on read only. And click OK
7.)double click on the shortcut. And your good to go.
but if you shutdown or restart your PC all the settings you made will be restarted, but the shortcut you made is still there. |

Thanks for the replies. I did mean the separate software named Vonage Talk, but I have a V-Phone, too. I'll need that information, as well.
Cross your fingers that all goes well with the new laptop for the trip. I don't have much time to play around.
About the V-Phone. I bought a V-phone at Radio Shack and called Vonage to set up my account on Sunday. Although my account says it's active, they have never sent me the email to tell me they have mapped the phone number to the mac address of the v-phone. When I plug in the v-phone the dial pad still does not appear. I've read that happens until vonage has finished setting up your account.
I haven't even really gotten to test my v-phone, yet. I've been plugging it into Windows XP computers periodlically to see if it's working, yet, but nothing.
Sometimes the Vonage Talk will work, though. At other times it can't seem to connect to the network. |

Are you referring to the error message "Couldn't connect to host" with Vonage Talk? If so, ignore that error message...you can still make outbound calls. |

No, I have learned to ignore the "Can't connect to Host" message at the bottom. From the dial pad you can still click the phone icon and dial.l
However, other times when I tried to connect, the phone icon remained grayed out. Nothing much would happen at all, and I would finally get a "Network error" at top followed by the sign in screen again. Then I would attempt to sign in again, but the same thing would happen.
Several hours later, it would work again. "Work" meaning that the phone icon was not grayed out and the I could dial out. |

try to statically set one of your DNS server to one of this IPs 216.115.24.230 or 216.115.31.140..so that it will connect to vonage. |

I have been making calls with Vonage Talk for a few days. It makes outgoing calls great, but cannot receive calls. Also, the contacts list does not get saved between sessions. What is the advantage of the Softphone, over just using Vonage Talk?
Does anyone know when Vonage Talk will be fixed regarding the contacts list problem? |

With Vonage talk you can only make calls to other pcs or to phones. You can only receive calls from other Vonage talk users or the IM programs listed.
Softphone cost you money each month but you can make up to 500 minutes of calls, and then you are charged a few cents a minute.
Not keeping the contact information is another one of those bugs in the program, it is still in the Alpha Stage. There used to be another version of vonage Talk that you could dial the number from Outlook, but this version is not working.
There are companies that offer free incoming numbers that you can use. |

Perhaps I am mis-reading your reply but in my experience, I can use Vonage Talk just like any other soft phone. I am able to make or receive calls to or from any phone number. I am uninterested in the IM capability but the voice seems to work very well.
I discovered this great little tool last night and have spent quite a bit of time playing with it and getting everything tested. I am running Windows Vista 64bit and the only issue I have encountered so far is that I am unable to put a call on hold and then recover it. Once it is on hold, it will not come back.
For a pre-release software it works pretty well and does everything I need it to do. Now I don't have to worry about using my work softphone while traveling, I can use my home phone.
Woo Hoo!
