What are the advantages of softphone? Why would I get this additional number which gives me only 500 minutes? Is there any unlimited option with softphone? Are incoming calls free?
Why won't Vonage let me use my existing Vonage number from a hardware router/adapter as well as from a software router/adaptor from my pc? |

Softphone works from your PC or Laptop. After the 500 minutes its 3.9 cents (I believe) There is not an unlimited product at this time Incoming calls are free.
Vonage wishes to make a profit off a great product, so you most have a separate number for your Softphone. |

A new Softphone solution is in the works for the near future. The public will b able to order it by itself, without having to have an existing Vonage account. And there will be multiple billing/payment options. |

Use of the softphone with the same number as the modem account would perhaps cause confusion over call routing issues. Suppose both were in use at the same time, the home account tried to call the softphone, etc. *************** With Vonage, incoming calls are never counted against your minutes on any plan. You never pay a fee for Outgoing toll free or Vonage to Vonage calls, and Incoming calls are always free with Vonage.
The only exception to this rule applies if you have a Toll Free Plus number on your account. Incoming calls to your Vonage Toll Free Plus number are charged after you have exceeded your monthly minutes
http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=653&category=0 *************** The softphone is very useful for travelers, office workers and students. Also adds great functionality to PocketPC. I now use the softphone exclusively at home while the modem travels with an employee. Hey, the softphone is *FUN*.
I hear that Vonage may soon offer a standalone softphone. I will consider tossing the modem and using another softphone instead, especially if they can add a JAVA version to take advantage of access from public PCs. (library, truck stops, borrowed access)

No "official" status yet, but x-ten has a new phone called the eyebeam which you can get to work with our service which is going to support audio/video for a call. The only problem i've seen is that since we don't currently "support" the eyebeam. If you miss a call/goes to voicemail, it will complete on the caller-end and you can leave a voicemail, however the softphone will just ring and ring on your PC. This is probably due to that we haven't integrated it yet with our system to properly send the cancel and bye messages. |
