How much bandwidth does Vonage use (roughly)? My connection plan includes about 400mb a day. Will I run into problems using the phone, say 1 or 2 hrs a day?

Per Vonage, "Vonage recommends an upload speed of 90kbps or greater." You have more than enough upload speed and should not have any problems that are bandwidth related.

Say you were gonna use the phone for two hours with the 90 kbps codec (and always negotiate with someone that allows 90 kbps as well). That's 11.25 kb/s, or 40mb/s an hour. Double that and you got your 40mb up AND down. That does not count the constant register requests with Vonage servers, but I have no clue as to how much bandwidth that chews up. But it's definitely nothing to worry about. You're better than fien.

You could always lower your setting to use only 30kbps or 50kbps as well. I always use 30kbps and for me, I think it sounds great. The only difference I can tell between the different bandwidth settings is the volume of the call. In fact, sometimes 90kbps was too loud even with the volume turned down to low on my phone. I would have to hold the phone away from my ear.

One worry I might interject . . . and this is just me reading between the lines and speculating . . .

A lot of times when I see such metered bandwidth, it is on some sort of satellite Internet provider. Please let us know if you are using satellite internet, as that is a whole different discussion!

Yes, I am using Hughesnet. I have tested my upload speeds at 60 to 90 kbps. Is that a deal breaker?

You should do a search in the forum for hughsnet and satallite internet with Vonage. Most of the post that I have read describe problems using Vonage with a satellite connection. Satellite internet has high latency which causes serious problems when having a conversation. Basically, it takes to much time for the voice/data packets to shoot into space and back down to earth, causing broken and delayed sound. You could always try the free month but I would definately read up on the forum first.
