*99 sets the bandwidth saver to High with some adapters. There is no extra charge. |

For any Linksys adapter *99 places the adapter in Modem Pass through mode. Similar to fax pass through. Essentially it turns off Echo cancel, call waiting, silence suppression, and DTMF transfer.
To use the highest bandwidth setting you either need to have it set that way in the Vonage control panel or dial *017110 from your phone.
There is no charge for either the bandwidth settings, or the modem pass through. |

"modem pass-through" simply refers to the adjustments that need to be made to allow a modem or a fax to work on a Voip line.
Generally the service is configured for normal telephone (voice) calls. The signal is compressed (something like mp3, but not quite the same), silence is suppressed and various other things are done to reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent over the wire.
These settings interfere with modems or fax machines, which are designed for regular telephone lines. So there's a setting called "modem pass-through" that reduces the adjustments sufficiently to allow a modem or fax to work. This also increases the quality of a voice call in some ways.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. |
