After failing to connect the Vonage Motorola VT2442 device to a D-Link router, I tried to connect this device to my brand new Linksys WRT54G Router. First, I followed the instructions provided by Vonage that says to put the Vonage device BEHIND the other router. This FAILED.

I then connected the Vonage device directly to the modem and connected the Vonage device to the INTERNET port of the Linksys and the Linksys via an LAN port to my desktop. The Vonage device worked, the desktop internet connection worked, but my laptop wireless connection FAILED.

Finally what did work was:
1) Connecting the Vonage device directly to the modem (blue connection).
2) Connecting the Vonage device to LAN port #1 of the Linksys router (yellow connection).
3) Connecting the desktop computer to LAN port #2 of the Linksys router. (The Linksys INTERNET port is now empty)

This allowed my Vonage device to work, my desktop LAN internet connection to work, and my portable wireless internet connection (with all its security measures) to work. FINALLY !!!! Hope this helps others struggling with this issue.

You're basically using the WRT as a switch. I'd recommend you switch them around, I would not rely on a VT2442 to do the routing.

Also, when doing that, if both routers are acting as DHCP servers, make sure that the sub-net address ranges given out by the two are different. If, for example, the LAN addressing from the router up front is 192.168.15.xxx, make sure that the LAN addressing for the second router in the chain is something like 192.168.16.xxx . Using a Linksys and a Motorola router, they will probably both default to the 15.xxx addressing.

He's not using the router portion on the second router, only the LAN ports on it, so it's a switch and all device are on the same subnet.

Yes, I meant that he should be careful about subnet addressing if he took your suggestion and switched things around. I was thinking that he would then use the WAN port on the VT to plug into the WRT, but I see that that isn't what you said.

I am trying to connect a LinkSys WRT-54G to my existing setup of:
VT2442 Voip,
cable modem (Comcast) and my new
Inspiron desktop (Vista).

Currently, I don't even think I am using the wireless PCI card that came with the new PC. So, right now, it goes cable modem to VT2442 and VT2442 to desktop ethernet. All works great, except now I want to put my laptop (IBM thinkpad R51-running XP Professional). I tried to do some finagling, and got the laptop to run wirelessly (but without security, which is no optimal), but desktop could not get online.

Also, my dad gave me the LinkSys, and it has no setup CD...

Can anyone help??? I set up a wireless conneciton with my old PC and the laptop a few years back, but that was before Vonage, and before I gave birth. Both factors seem to be slowing my cognition...can anyone help?
