It may be my imagination but...
It seems as if calls placed/recieved with Vonage are only half-duplex. For those of you not familiar with the term, it means traffic (ie voice) can only pass one direction at a time. With telephones it's usually whoever talks the loudest.
The only other time I've experienced this is with old, cheap speakerphones.
I'm using a VTA-VR adapter.
Anyone else notice this?

Full Duplex here. Linksys RT31P2 (trouble free for 2 1/2 years). |

Full duplex here as well. I'm sure that if this were a common problem we'd have gotten an ear full by now. Mark, how do your Voip speed test scores look? |

I'll try some speed test tonight when I get home, along with more "duplex" testing.
3M down 678Kb up dsl has shown great variability in the past between different testing times-of-day.
Was on a vidioconference (1.1Mb video-over-IP) yesterday and got the same audio "feeling" I get with Vonage calls. When someone at the other end started speaking during a between-the-sentence pause by the other end, the other end would keep speaking for a second or two then stop. But by that time, the "new" speaker realized the other end was still talking and shut up. At that point, both ends were in a "listening contest".
This is common with videoconferencing and is a timing delay issue. I suspect the same could be the case with my Vonage "problem". The calls I notice it on are all to/from PSTN lines. I know a couple of other Vonage customers nearby and will try testing with them, too.

I suspect that you're right. Delays would "feel" much the same as half-duplex operation in some respects. |
