Having a constant background humming with my Vonage connection. Must keep phone volume low to make call listenable on my end. Here is my set up and Voip test results

Bristol, CT
Comcast Cable Modem connected to DLink Dir 655, QOS set to Voip priority 1
Linksys PAP2 adapter to Router :Phone - Panasonic Dect 6.0 KX-TG1034S (3rd phone tried,
MySpeed Detail for Test #41850
Summary
This report refers to a connection test carried out by IP address [hidden] on Aug 14, 2007 9:41:03 PM.

Download speed 6201 Kbps (socket test)
Upload speed 344 Kbps (socket test)
Quality of service 95 %
Maximum pause 210 ms
Round trip time 27 ms
Upstream jitter 26.7 ms
Upstream packet loss 0 %
Upstream packet order 100 %
Upstream discards 0 %
Downstream jitter 11.2 ms
Downstream packet loss 0 %

Any suggestions on router settings, connections, anything to remove the annoying and constamt background noise? Vonage tech support blamed it on low upload bandwith, yesterday I tested and receiced 99 KBPS, the test results above reference a Jitter problem that could cause line noise, not sure what that is....

The background humming noise you are experiencing could be caused by one of your power adapters being plugged in to the wrong source; i.e. the power adapter for your cable modem may be plugged into the router instead of the cable modem. Check to make sure that each power adapter is connected to it's corresponding device.

Is the phone plugged directly into the adapter, or into the house jack?

Have you:

1) Plugged the phone directly into the adapter to see if the humming goes away?

2) COMPLETELY disconnected the POTS service drop at the outside box?

Re. #2, if you still have the POTS line connected, then it's voltage from the POTS line causing the loud humming (even if you cancelled your POTS service-- voltage will still exist). This is not only annoying but will eventually destroy your Vonage adapter.

Re. #1, if you have already disconnected POTS completely, there is probably some voltage being induced into the phone wiring by a nearby source. You'll need to properly ground the wiring to bleed off that stray voltage. If you plug the phone directly into the adapter and the humming remains, then it's either a problem with the phone itself or the adapter. If the humming goes away, the house wiring is likely at fault.

Just a couple of things...

1. Parden my ignorance, but is POTS referencing killing the connection on my side of the outside phone box? If so, then Yes, I have. Strange, the box had 2 jacks, disconnected them both. Can use all the inside house Jacks on the second floor, none on first floor will work.

2. I have plugged the phone directly into the adapter, still get the humming, I will try again as I have had 3 phones that I have tried, all get the humming. Worth a shot to try again...

What kind of source could the stray voltage come from, not sure what you mean
