Here are the facts as I know them.
1. Brand new Tivo Series 2/40 hour.
2. Vonage customer using new Linksys WRT54GP2 (router/adapter/wirelss)
3. Cannot get through initial guided set up without call getting dropped.
4. Have tried several of the "Prefex ,#" combinations including ",#019" and ",#039" and a few others while on Tech support with Vonage.
5. Tivo says it is not an issue they will address, support or even guess.
6. Vonage readily admits it is an issue on their end and is working on it. (SEE "FINAL WORD post elsewhere in this discussion) They tried some packet magic and other assorted downloads, to no avail.) Iv'e yet to get beyond a 9 minute time out during download phase of the procedure.
7. USB/Ethernet adapter arrives tomorrow, and planned on using the ",#401" workaround, but Tivo says "until the initial guided set up is complete(having been initialted via phone jack) the USB adapter networking fix WILL NOT be good for anything. If only I had known, the USB can work, IF it is the first thing TiVo sees when booted, it will be fine. Or so I'm told. I'll be testing TiVo's reset or start from scratch CANNOT BE DONE theory tomorrow.
8. So here I am. Stuck between Tivo, Vonage and a bunch of neighbors I don't like. Of course I could run 50 feet of phone cord to their place and borrow their wimpy landline I need so badly.
9. I'm not calling Linksys...I just can't...you have to undertand...I just don't have it in me tonight.
Looking for ideas.

I had a similar problem with my DirecTV Tivo using my Linksys RT31P2. Check out this link to the Tivo Community where I explain how I got it working. You have to specify to the tech if you don't get the right one what you need done. The Tech I got has both a Tivo and Vonage with the beta version of the Linksys Vonage box you have and he knew everything that needed to be done to get it working.

Please know I love my Vonage, but until they are able to address the issues with using their service with TiVo, I have to highly recommend networkiig your TiVo with a USB/Ethernet adapter and go that route. (Plenty of ducumentation on how to do it on the Net)
Took 5 minutes.
Thanks for everyone's help. Linksys USB/Ethernet adapter arrived today.
1. Power down TiVo.
2. Install Linksys Adapter into back of Series 2 TiVo.
3. Attach ethernet to adapter and router(or PC)
4. Power up TiVo and follow directions as normal until you get to the DIALING OPTIONS
5. Use Prefix ",#401"
6. I disabled all "tone/line detections".
7. I just used the recommended "phone number" it gave on screen based on area code submitted. I don't believe it amtters once you've added the ",#401"
8. Everythign elle is the same. Took about 10 minutes to complete everything else.
9. Bottom line IMHO. If you have VoIP, just spend the $28 and get the adapter. |

Unfortunately a large number of TiVO owners like myself cannot take advantage of the USB Ethernet adapter option, because we have our TiVOs through DirecTV. Lots of hacking would be required to get the USB ports working on the DirecTV model since DirecTV disables most features on the box by default.
If you can get the right guy on Vonage's tech support you CAN get the TiVO working over the Vonage line.
I know because that is how I got mine working.
Good Luck! |

I long for the day when every thing on Earth with a battery, also has either Bluetooth, a USB slot or 10/100 Ethernet. That will be the rule, when i'm King of the World...lol |

The truth of the matter is that Vonage DOES NOT support the use of TiVo with our voice adapters. We give some details in the help section of our website to assist those who wish to attempt it, but it is not supported. It requires entirely too much bandwidth to work successfully with all internet connections. And especially when it come to downloading those initial update/downloads...unless u've got AT LEAST 256k upload to dedicate entirely to the TiVo, I don't think it's gonna happen. It is do-able, but u need massive upload bandwidth. |

I have a Motorola ATA unit (at work no idea of software ver) and it was working very well for almost a year now using ,#034,*99 in the prefix. Some time in Nov it wouldn't dial out anymore using those codes. I changed the code to ,#019 and it worked for about a month.
Well it no longer works, I get a phone is busy error message everytime??? |

I was able to successfully connect 12 out of 12 tries on a Series 2 directv/tivo using *99 in the call waiting field, with dial tone detection turned off. |

Not anymore. TiVos downloads are performed over the satellite, the phone call activates it. The calls in last a minute and pass information about PPVs and things of that nature.
Vonage needs to get on the bandwagon. ATT CallVantage just announced they are compatable with the TiVo units. This is a major sticking point with us DirecTv TiVo owners. Sure, I am enjoying the services from Vonage and the great pricing, but my nag screen will get on my nerves and I will look around.
Also Vonage needs to adopt ACR. I don't like receiving blocked calls and would like to reject them. You want to be the leader in VOIP then take the reigns and show initiative. The other players are catching up fast! |
