After many cell phone calls to Vonage tech support and reading the Mac OSX guides, I finally got the Motorola VT2142 set up with my static address, but adjusting the bandwidth- either those I call have echoing, or I have broken sound, static noises to the point where I cannot have conversations. The lights on the hone line and the internet line are often amber rather than green, but the tech support said the signals are more than adequate. Any suggestions? I only got instructions for Windows use, incidentally, so I am pretty much on my own, cannot hear any instructions and our cell phone reception in our rural location is iffy, also.thanks.

this is the only forum I have experienced, so I realize I must be doing something incorrectly but the V- tech pretty much said if I want to get this set up correctly, I need to get tech help from other members. So now, with the rest of my life still going full speed, I have to learn telephony, forums...so where is the sticky message spot on the forum post?

Sticky: What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage....

Also, you may want to explain what you mean by wirelesss DSL. DSL is digital subscriber line, an internet sevice provided by your telephone carrier over their copper lines. Wireless is well, wireless. This would be something provided as a wireless line-of-site type of service where you would have an antenna pointed at another antenna several miles away from you. Wireless could also technically mean satellite such as Directway or Wild Blue. We would need to know exactly what you have to help you out.

I have line of site tower to satellite to Ethernet Modem to Motorola VT2142 thence to Belkin wireless router for MacBook with OSX 10.4.9. Can successfully access the Intenet via the modem or the Motorola and the wireless. I set the Motorola connection to a recently and purposefully assigned Static IP address. The Motorola would not connect with either configuration using plug and play(or pray) or PPPoE. I followed the Motorola instructions specified for static IP address and get internet and phone service. Wireless Belkin seems to be at same speed etc, the Motorola phone connection I did every step I could find (be sure Belkin is more than 4 feet from Motorola, tried corded phones, used a better phone cord to connect any phone, switched the bandwidth , trying all three levels available for customer adjustment. Apparently our audience hears us crisply, slight echo is volume is turned up beyond lowest point on the phone BUT we cannot hear more than 5 words in a row, crackling noise or silence(can you hear me now?). Thank you, I ran the analyses 4 times and of course got wildly and widely varying results EXCEPT that the QOS was always 32%, whether my speed would work for one phone or 5 phones. Any suggestions? I read the entire Motorola Guide (downloaded), Apple advice for OSX. My ISP is interested in my results- the last business operator had Vonage ads and test link on the web page.

If you have satellite in the path, that is most likely your problem.

Ping yahoo.com and post back with your latency.

Do the same with google.com.

I picked those 2 sites primarily because they do geographic load balancing, so they're more likely to return a best-case scenario.

If you're not sure what I mean, open a command prompt (terminal window) and key in "ping www.google.com" (without the quotes) That will return an output similar to:

Code:
root@mx7% ping  www.google.com
PING www.l.google.com (64.233.169.99): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 64.233.169.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=243 time=25.147 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.169.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=243 time=24.747 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.169.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=243 time=25.780 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.169.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=243 time=25.002 ms

Hit CNTL-C to stop the pinging after a few results. In this case, the latency is approx 25 ms.

I'm looking for the result of your set of pings.

--- www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 55.143/169.313/408.338/129.140 ms
Here is the result from google pinging. Please tell me whether further tests are needed and what the results of this test demonstrate.

Well there is your problem, 129ms standard deviation, 350ms max deviation. That is what is known as jitter in the Voip world and will produce quite a choppy conversation. Just for comparison sake my average ping to google is 25ms with a standard deviation of 1ms, max 2ms deviation over 10 packets. For the best quality you want that average ping to google(well, to Vonage really) to be no more than say 100ms(1/10th of a second delay in audio transmission) and you definitely want to improve that standard deviation to something 50(1/20th of a second difference in packet transmission times) or under for best results, you can get away with 100ms stddev but it still might be a source of problems in the future. So, basically what you need to do is talk to your ISP and see if they can do anything to lower your standard deviation and round-trip time, if they can't then there really is no fixing the problem without going to another ISP. This is a frequent problem with wireless and especially satellite ISP's and most of the time unfortunately there is not much your ISP can do about it.
