Post subject: DLINK VWR Problems
Hi, I have a list of problems with my DLINK VWR wireless router.
I have read thru other posts but no couldnt find any resolutions.
Firmware Version: VWR-11.4.0-r060331-1.00.03-r061127.img
problems
1. DHCP will not work, I assign the IP address statically and it works at least for machines that are hard-wired to the router.
2. My XBOX 360 which is using Wireless can not communicate with the router at all, even if I assign a static IP, if I reboot the router it connects for all of maybe 5 seconds and then it loses it again, it detects full signal strength, it just does not communicate with the router.(ping fails). Unfortunately I dont have any other wireless devices to test with as I dont have a laptop.
3. Making outbound calls I have to do it twice, on first attempt I always get a fast busy signal, second attempt it works.
4. Incoming calls got about a 10 second delay before they can hear me but it is fine after that.
If anyone has any solutions to these problems it would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I wll be heading to the store to get a linksys wireless router WRT54g and a PAP2 Device for the phone portion.
Thanks

A separate router and
Vonage
device are my recommendation, anyway. I have no recommendations for the DHCP issue except possibly a really overzealous firewall (my father in law struggles with DHCP sometimes running ZoneAlarm Free, for example). As far as the wireless, that sounds like maybe a WEP or WPA encrypted network that you are possibly presenting the wrong credentials to. Try TEMPORARILY running the WLAN as "open/unsecured" and see if the XBOX can connect. But you generally don't want to leave it that way...
As far as a router, I'd see about getting a WRT54GL instead of the WRT54G. The WRT54GL is a Linux-based variant of the WRT54G, and can take aftermarket open source firmware that really, REALLY makes that router work wonders. My current favorite aftermarket firmware project for the WRT54GL is "Tomato" -

Of course, you'll probably also be pretty happy with the WRT54G itself - it's a good, solid router.

Post subject: DHCP and WEP/WPA
Thank you for your reply. I am going to look into the router you suggested, but just in response to some of your other suggestions.
I have another router which I had connected before, it is not a wireless router though and DHCP from that router works fine, so I dont believe a firewall is at play here.
I tried leaving the wireless network open as a test as well already, thats how I discovered if I reboot the router and connect right away, I have a connection thru wireless for all of 5 seconds and then it drops.
I tried pretty much everything I can think of, I work in IT so troubleshooting is second nature to me. I think I just need to stop being cheap, bite the bullet, and go purchase a seperate wirelesss router and
vonage
device. Im pretty sure its just this device that is crap.
Thank you

Sounds like the D-Link is a crispy critter. You can try calling
Vonage
to see if there is a newer firmware for it, etc, but in all honesty I've never liked the integrated
Vonage
device / router combos (I have a WRTP54G, and I love it as a
Vonage
adapter, but as a router... ummm.... NO!).
Exchange that puppy for a simpler
Vonage
device and a PROPER router and I think you'll have a much better experience for it.

-keep it that way
2. -try to check the WEP..if not do a port forwarding
3. Making outbound calls I have to do it twice, on first attempt I always get a fast busy signal, second attempt it works.
-restart the voice gateway..login to the router page..
4. Incoming calls got about a 10 second delay before they can hear me but it is fine after that.

Port forwarding? excuse my ignorance but how does port forwarding come into play here? He just can't connect from his XBOX to his (crappy) VWR. I don't see how that would be related to downstream traffic from the internet that he needs to forward to the XBOX.
I say upgrade the firmware and check if it works better, or just get rid of this router altogether. Also, regarding de busy signal, have you tried resetting the router?

You may also want to check to make sure you don't have something silly like MAC filtering turned on in the router. Suppose not if it's been hard reset - If you log on to the Web gui and open the DHCP client list ( Dlink router's usually have a DHCP client list on the LAN set up page) can you see the Xbox? If so then it may be an DNS issue only.

General solution for any and all VWR problems:
Tools required: minimum 6lb sledge hammer...
Mark
PS - also works as a good way to configure new units
