PostPosted: Thu Aug 09, 2007 1:11 pm    Post subject: Verizon to Vonage Port Question Reply with quote Back to top

On July 20th, I started a new service with Verizon for purpose of a security system. Little did I know that the company I selected said they can install a cell phone based security system, and even use Vonage as a backup to the cell solution.

Well, being that I started the new service on July 20th, and don't need to be dropping $40 a month to Verizon. But Vonage says I can't port the number yet. Both online and when I called. Vonage said they have no record. Verizon said that once I get my first bill, which was August 3rd, the number would be public...

Any idea how long it takes for a new service to be picked up by Vonage to port?

Is there any way to just initiate the port, at which point Veirzon and Vonage will realize the number is actually mine?

Thanks.

In all honesty, I'm not really understanding the situation here.

However, I'll just assume basically that you couldn't port the number because of either; A) The TN could not be found or B) There is a pending request on the number and it's unable to be ported (possibly because of the security feature or what not).

In the case of A, http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco could be used to locate the number, with that carrier code there's no reason a port could not have begun.

In terms of B, the issue would need to be resolved before the number can begin it's port.

But, basically, if either phone company (Vonage or Verizon) are saying the number cannot be ported, it can't be ported. There's no reason to for anyone to give incorrect information otherwise. And same goes with if either of the carriers said the port request could not be done until a certain date, the best you can do is just wait for that day than try to initiate the port.

But yeah, if you could give me some more information or possibly clarify the situation for me a bit more, I may be able to help you a bit further.

OK, I'll try to clarify...

I started a new line of service, at a new house (as in new construction) on July 23rd, 2007. It's a land line with Verizon. Not that it matters, but the only reason I got the land line was for my security system which was installed a week later. However, when the tech for my security system, he hooked up my security system to a cell based transmitter, and said I could use Vonage as a secondary method to contact them. No need to have a land line.

Well, as soon as I heard those sweet words, I wanted to port my number from Verizon over to Vonage.

Vonage website says "presently can't transfer this number". So I called, got routed around a few times, but basically was told the number was too new to be ported over.

So I called Verizon and they said that it usually takes a billing cycle before you can port the number. It was explained to me by Verizon that no one was aware of the number since it was new, and that it would eventually be able to be ported.

So my ultimate questions is, how long from the time you have new service installed with Verizon (or any telco for that matter) until a number is portable? I'd like to keep my number, but it's not a huge requirement.

A couple follow up questions, is the Voange website the most up to date way to check? Or will calling provide me a more up to date status to see if my number is portable.

Make sense now?

Ah, okay, I understand now.

Well, I've never heard of a situation like that. Sounds kind of weird that the number is "too new". However, I'm sure if the third party just released the number to Verizon and it wasn't previously with another carrier, that could make the number "too new". In which case, yeah, you may have to wait a little bit (probably for the end of your first billing cycle).

Edit: And, if Telco has recognized the number as a Verizon number, I don't see a reason as to why Vonage can't transfer it. The only other possibility I can think of is the number may be outside Vonage's able foot print, in which case, a Vonage and/or Verizon customer service representative may be able to educate you further.

In all honesty though, sounds like this number may give you a bit of problems in transfer (if it's even transferable). But 99% of numbers will eventually transfer, just depends how long you want to wait Smile

And yeah, if you're wanting to transfer a number, using www.Vonage.com and calling the primary customer service and/or tech support line just to ensure it is/isn't, is usually a good idea.
