I've got time warner in NYC and a Motorola VT1005 as well and I started having this issue about 2 weeks ago. I spoke with Vonage support yesterday and all they had for me was the directions to reset the adapter.

plug ethernet from your computer directly into the PC jack on the adapter, then click this link.

motorla advanced admin

click on the restore factory defaults button.

I'm not yet sure if its made any difference. So, if you figure it out, please post back here and share.

Thanks, but I've tried that, without resolution.

I don't have the info here in front of me but when I go back to work on Monday I have a spreadsheet with most cable modems and their docsis versions. I'm pretty sure I've dealt with this thompson/rca modem before and I seem to recall two versions, depending on the serial #. They were 1.0 or 2.0 depending on when they were made. IT may be a 50/50 chance...

And to the guy who asked what docsis iw...Stands for Data Over Cable Internet Systems - it's what effectively sends the packets of info across into the net. If you have an older version it wont handle the required number of packets per second ( or milisecond ) to make Vonage work well. It's like firmware sort of but you can't usually flash a new version to your modem, so to answer your question you may have to upgrade or buy a new modem. But before you do anything, I will check for you on Monday to see if there were 2 versions for your modem and if there were - how to distinguish which one you've got - Blackjack could very well be right - in which case there is somthing else causing the dropped audio...

A few things I know will cause dropped calls are;

- if your device overheats it resets itself - will cause the call to drop - make sure your device is well ventilated and seperated from other device . Don't install it on top of other electronic devices - if you touch it and it feels warm to you ( it may be slightly warmer than room temp but shouldn;t be much more than that )

- If you use cordless phones and have a wireless router, make sure the phones aren't 2.4Ghz phones as they will compete for the same frequency as the router ( and the router will win ) - IF you do have this situation, the only solution is new phones - even go so far as to remove the batteries from the handsets when you remove the 2.4Ghz phones.

- If you are using splitters, home wiring, wireless jacks or have any other set-up besides a phone connected directly into the back of the adapter, try testing with a single phone plugged in to the back of the Vonage device - It may isolate where the problem is. If you're ok when it's one phone only in the back of the adapter, it could be an indication that you have some faulty wiring somewhere or that Vonage needs to increase the voltage coming out of the back of the device. If you're using your home's wiring the voltage should almost certainly be increased.

- Are you by any chance going deaf?

Here's the thing. My service worked fine until about a month or two ago with the same modem, so I'm pretty sure it isn't a docsis issue.

The problem of dropped audio is intermittent, so I'm beginning to think it's cable-related. When I run the Voip test I get different results at different times. The cable co said that as far as they can tell from their office the signal to my house seems fine, but they agreed to send a tech out next week to do some tests.

If anyone out there know what tests I should make sure the tech does, that would be helpful. Thanks.

I also have the same problem with intermittent incoming audio and coincidentally enough I too am in New York with Time-Warner using Earthlink just like choifoto.
When I am on the phone having a conversation at intermittent points the incoming audio will just go dead sometimes for just a second and sometimes for several seconds and I noticed that when I am on the phone the internet light on my Vonage Adapter will turn off but it will light up during those intermittent moments when I lose the incoming audio and then it will turn off again when the incoming audio comes back.
When I finish my conversation and hang up the phone the internet light lights up and turns green again.
I just dont get it...I can't figure out how to solve this problem.
By the way my cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2500
Can anyone help?

Sad
My service has not worked since June 22, 2007. Vonage has sent me two new modems and run a bazillion tests. When making or receiving a call, within 2 or 3 minutes I lose incoming audio completely. Any new calls made or received still have no incoming audio. If I power off the modem and turn it back on, I get incoming audio again for the 2 to 3 minute range and then back again to square one. Vonage headquarters has been on it intermittently, but with no positive results. I have Verizon DSL and no changes were made prior to the loss of service. Verizon did send me a new modem, but the end results were the same. HELP PLEASE...Steve

I wondering where you are in the city? I'm wondering if there is a issue with time warner, not Vonage. I'm on the upper west side.

TWC cable came today and gave the cable a clean bill of health. But I still have the dropped audio!

This is ludicrous. It's time to go back to copper wires. Thanks for all the help and good luck.

TWC packet shaping in NYC makes me thinks Voip is far from ready to go mainstream yet. At least not til Docsis 3.0 / ADSL2+ / FiOS become more common.

I am amazed that after almost 2 months without my Vonage service working properly, I have discovered that NO Vonage device works correctly at my home (I tried another device with a different phone number). Neither works correctly at my office either. I have Verzion DSL both at home and work. I think Verizon has hijacked my Vonage. Verizon says,"Not us!". I lose incoming audio anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. Vonage advanced tech support and the BIG guys at New Jersey hdqtrs can't seem to figure it out. It looks like Verizon screwed me over with Vonage and then reaps the benefits when I have to give my second line back to them.
