From what I can see, the tests are comparable (i.e. your ISP service is not capable of running consistent Voip connections). Look at your jitters and latency as well as packet discards.

I know that you didn't change anything on your end, but something changed on the end of the condo side. Since you are using an ethernet jack in your condo, some place there is a router that is directing all that traffic that is not in your control for your condo building. So that's the reason why I was saying that your best bet is to get DSL or cable internet where you have control over how the traffic is routed.

I think with your 2 tests, you have shown that it isn't the Vonage router that is bad. But you can also take it to a friend's house who has cable internet and see if it works there. If so, then you have definitely nailed it in terms of the problem being the internet at your condo.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 9:04 pm    Post subject: Update still looking for advice Reply with quote Back to top

I am guessing that at this point in time my condo complex has installed a router that is blocking certain ports that Vonage is using for the actual calls. Please note the router still connects to the internet, and it is able to receive updates from Vonage and is also able to be seen by Vonage as connected.

So my question at this point is: Is it possible to have Vonage change which ports my device uses for calls? Do different routers use different ports?

I truelly have been happy with having Vonage service, but I hate to have to cancel it and transfer my service back to Bellsouth (now ATT), which may be my only other option. Our complex has directv (so no cable internet option). I can go DSL, but to get it I need local phone service, so Vonage would be pointless to keep if I go that route. (naked DSL costs the same as local + DSL)

Please ---- any further insight would be appreciated, as I really would like to keep Vonage service, since I have had them w/o issue for over 3 years !!!! I have been an actual very happy customer who has referred a few people over the years !!!!

Also, please look at my previous tests.
When I use testyourvoip.com they use a simulated phone call of port 5060 to do the actual test and the call goes through with average quality.

Why would that go through, but not Vonage?
