Post subject: Can I set up Vonage in Texas and use it in Dominican Rep.??
Hello,
I would like to set up the
Vonage
service in Texas, and then after I have the local number, rellocate the router in the Dominican Republic with the Tx number.
Is it possible??
What can I do to have free unilimited calls between Houston and Dominican Republic?? I was told the above trick works. But Im suspicious about the Tx number functioning in the DR.
Thank you.

Yes, what you are wanting will work, assuming you have an Internet service in DR that is fast and stable enough to handle
Vonage
, like cable or DSL here. If you have that, you will be set.
What you will then have is a phone IN THE DR that has a Texas phone number. That means anyone for whom that Texas number is local will be able to call you toll free, even though you are physically in DR. That also means that, assuming you have the
Vonage
unlimited plan, you can make, FROM THE DR, unlimited calls to anywhere in the US, at no extra cost.
What you WON'T have is a number that locals around you in DR can call -- if that is your only phone there, then anyone local to you in DR would be making an international call to reach you, even if they're your next door neighbor in DR -- to them, they would be calling Texas.
But rest assured, what you are asking about works, can work very well, and is very common for
VoIP
users (especially popular with military families living abroad).

vonage
won't give tech support if you are outside of the U.S or Canada, read the terms of service on their site.
Just make sure you have a good internet connection in the Dominican before you go.

To add one more point - many foreign governments are affiliated with the local telco monopoly, and restrict or ban the use of competing products like
VoIP
. Check the laws in the Dominican Republic on this.
Also, you'll probably want to find someone in the DR who has the same Internet connection you are about to get, and see if they can run the
VoIP
Test at
www.testyour
voip
.com to make sure the connection will support
VoIP
.
www.dslreports.com
has a lot of forums for Broadband users, you may be able to find someone who can advise you on the legal matters and/or run a test for you.
But, as stated before in this thread, IF you have a good Internet connection that can get to the
Vonage
servers,
Vonage
doesn't care where the adapter is physically located - the adapter will reach
Vonage
's servers over the Internet and into the US, where the
VoIP
<->Telephone bridge is located.
Don't bother calling for support from the DR, though. They won't ship a replacement adapter there, and they really can't do much to support an international connection. Run the adapter through its paces for a couple of weeks in the US first, and make sure you have the proper power adapters if the DR does not use US standard 120V/60Hz power, because many of the
Vonage
adapters do not have autoswitching power supplies.

Post subject: I have cable modem....
Hello, thank you all for your replies. They've explained me what I wanted to know.
Now, I must check if my cable modem supports the
VoIP
bandwidth. The thing about that connection is that sometimes it can be so fast and some other kind of slow. Maybe I should switch to DSL... The cost difference is around 10-15 bucks.
I had a friend in the DR that was using the system and he recommended it, so I think it will be Ok about the legal issues.
About the support, im dead with no choice. But I could take the risk and give it a try. My telephone bill is super high, last month usd$212.. I need to work this out.
