I have done what they said. I am using a WRT54GP2 and I found the router did a pretty good job handling the phone calls even when downloading. I will try it out later while downloading a torrent file and while on a call.

Thanks for the link.

OK - I got the solution from Earthlink - my ISP provider. But it will probably work for everyone with this horrible problem...

This is what earthlink told me how to fix that pausing problem:

Turn off your computer, modem, and router (vonage box), and UNPLUG the CABLE going to the modem. Wait 30 sec - and then follow exactly this order:

1. Turn on your cable modem first - and wait until the lights come on.
2. Plug the cable back in.
3. Turn on the Vonage router box.
4. Turn on your computer.

It did work for me.

No more pauses...

PostPosted: Tue Aug 07, 2007 12:53 am    Post subject: Call Drop Out Using SMC Basricade 2804 Router Reply with quote Back to top

I started in March with Sun Rocket as my Voip supplier. I was very satisfied with Sun Rocket after the initial setup. Then the bomb dropped when they went out of business. I signed up for Vonage and now, I get random reports that people can't hear me. Yet other times people say the audio is great. I can always hear the other end of the call just fine.

I have been reading forums all night trying to see if there is any setup details I have missed. Vonage tech support is really lame -- when they can speak English.

I am willing to buy about anything I can if there is a hardware solution to poor call quality. I have been reading about routers with QOS capability. I could divert most of my bandwidth to voice as when I use the phone, I don't need much PC power. If the SMC could be set up to give priority to Voip, that would be great. If not, what can I buy now and will it help.

I have a Motorola SB5101 cable router. Cableone.net is my ISP. My set up is SB5101<-->SMC 2804<->Vonage Motorola 2442. I have three PCs on home network but usually only one in use (no gaming, no kids). PC's are connected into the back in back of Motorola 2442 ( a recent configuration change). For the last several days, I have turned one PC off completely to see if the problem is reduced or would go away. Can't tell.

I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks for your suggestions.

BilQ:

Please read the sticky post at the top of the forum entitled "What to post when you are having technical problems with Vonage", and you're probably best off starting a new thread. When 3-4 problems get mixed together in a thread, it becomes really hard to follow along.

Thanks!

I also have the same problem with intermittent incoming audio and coincidentally enough I too am in New York with Time-Warner using Earthlink just like all of you.
When I am on the phone having a conversation at intermittent points the incoming audio will just go dead sometimes for just a few seconds and sometimes for 10-15 seconds and I have noticed that when I am on the phone the internet light on my Vonage Adapter (Motorola VT2142) will turn completely off but it will light up during those intermittent moments when I lose the incoming audio and then it will turn off again when the incoming audio comes back.
I just dont get it...I can't figure out how to solve this problem.
I have only been a Vonage customer for about 2 weeks now, I ported over from Sunrocket after they closed down and I never had this problem with my Sunrocket service which I had for over a year.
By the way my cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2500
Can anyone help?

Well Time Warner changed my old RCA modem with a new RCA modem and the pauses disappeared - and I am in the Middletown area. So GET your modems changed...
