I have: Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem. Vonage VT 2142 router Linksys WRT54GS wireless router.
I want to still have Vonage serivce, just have wireless internet throughout my place.
I tried doing cable modem --> linksys --> Vonage, but the linksys would not be recognized in its installation disk. Also, the phone would not work like this.
Any help? Is this even possible? Do I need the VT 2142? Is it essential for having Vonage phone? |

Connect the Wan port of your VT2142 to the Cable Modem. Connect the Wan port of your wireless router to the Lan port of the VT2142. I always recommend connecting the Vonage router directly to the Cable Modem. I have VT2442s in two different locations and they both work fine.
Make sure when you reconfigure all the connections that you turn off all three devices for one minute before powering back up. This ensures that each box gets the address.
Let us know how you make out.

And yes, you do need to have the VT2142 or a similar Vonage adapter to get Vonage phone service.
Whether you put the Linksys first or the VT2142 first, check and make sure that the two routers aren't using the same DHCP address range. If, for example, you have the VT2142 first as suggested above, and it's giving our DHCP addresses in the range 192.168.15.xxx, and the Linksys is plugged into it and is also giving out addresses in the range 192.168.15.xxx, you're going to have problems. In this example I would change the DHCP range of the Linksys to 192.168.16.xxx .
If you elect to put the Linksys first, then you can plug your computer into it and simply disable DHCP in the VT2142 and avoid the problem above. You'd be using the VT as a simple phone adapter. If you do that, then set QoS in the Linksys to favor the VT2142, or you may get poor voice quality when the computer is in use. |
