I am trying to help a friend debug a problem with Vonage that has never worked right. Its connected to a Verizon DSL modem/router. I have not run any of the the tests yet, but plan to soon. Vonage support says there are too many packets lost and the problem is with the Verizon DSL. I have read and given thought and it seems very odd that all the packets are fine for 2-3 minutes (and voice is fine) then all of a sudden the packet lost problem causes the incoming voice to be lost. All that can be done is to power off/on the Vonage adapter and it will work again on the next call for 2-3 minutes.

My guess is a defective Vonage adapter.

I would suggest to you to run the tests with and without the Vonage adapter connected then compare the results.

You might also just try running the test several times at random intervals. See if your max pause changes from time to time. The CS techs may be right in this instance. If your service is pretty steady but takes hits every few minutes, it would explain the problem. I've been experiencing similar dropped call issues lately, and I suspect that it's my ISP.

I ran the test from this forum, 992,000 dowload, 382,000 upload, QOS 70%, RTT 38ms, max pause 308 ms. I also ran the test from www.testyourvoip.com if someone would like those tests.

This failure seems odd, the speech is fine in both directions for he first 2 or 3 minutes, then the incoming speech drops, nothing. If you hang up and try another call no incoming speech. Power the Vonage box/off and on and it will work again for another shot. Its not a random thing, it will fail every time after 2-3 minutes.

If this was a lost or discarded packet problem then I believe there would be speech quality problems before the speech drops all together. And it would be much more random in nature.

Please post the detailed test results. The ones from testyourvoip would be helpful too. Run them with and without the Vonage box in the circuit.

You may be right about the Vonage adapter going south, but look at your max pause. That's over 3/10 of a second. I suspect it wouldn't take many hits much longer than that to cause a call to drop.

After one of these drops happens, will leaving everything alone for a few minutes bring things back, or do you actually have to cycle power on the Vonage box?

If you also have broadband service and it's different from your friend's, you could try taking the Vonage box home and trying it there. See if the same problem occurs.

My parents Vonage service has gone really bad since their cable provider was taken over by another company, the packet loss on their connection is now quite high and also their basic surfing performance has degraded. Consequently this has ruined the quality of their Vonage service, luckily they move in a month to a non cable area, and will be cancelling Vonage service.

Loss of incoming voice after a given period sounds like your modem or router (or even your ISP) may have some form of "flood attack prevention".

Check the settings for the Verizon router and see if there is any sort of firewall you can turn off, etc.

EDIT: Given that this is Verizon we are talking about, they may also have "competition prevention" in place, under the GUISE of "flood attack prevention" - kidding! Wink

I went to Sams and picked up a Linksys Voip adapter and swapped that for the Motorola VOIP/router than Vonage had sent me. Problem resolved. Not one dropped call. I really fault Vonage tech suport for not resolving the problem, wasting my time and saying that the problem was within the DSL servoice.
