Thanks. I like that idea. She could just use the home number as her sole contact number. This would also keep her from receiving cell calls at home and racking up minutes while the Vonage line goes unused.

Thanks

I had complained about this same issue on the Vonage "Customer Care by Email" page over a month ago, never got any response. The idea of totally disabling voicemail on my cell phone is unacceptible to me, as this is my work phone so I need to be able to get voicemail to my cell as well as to my home phone number. It seems like it should be a really brain-dead feature on the SimulRing that if the incoming caller ID matches the number it's supposed to ring to, that it would temporarily disable the feature. I hope Vonage will at least consider correcting this issue, based on this thread it sounds like that isn't happening.

Thanks. - Will

I have call forwarding to my T-Mobile Cell. When I want to call my wife at home, the simultaneous ring goes straight to my VM. She does hear one ring but can't pick it up in time.

Im currently testing Vonage and Lingo service side by side. When I do the same exact experiment with Lingo, the lingo service rings the home phone and if there is no answer goes to voicemail. They must have some kind of caller ID filtering for the simul-ring function.

Its so hard to decide between the providers, one shines where the other fails and vice versa.

I couldn't find a way to disable the cell VM. So Lingo doesn't have this issue? Do you know if they use the same devices?

No, Lingo does not have this simultaneous ring problem. When I call home from my cell, it rings and rings and then goes to lingo voicemail not my cellphone vm.

Here is my comparison thus far. I'm running out of trial period and am having a heck of a time deciding between the two.

Lingo Advantages:
+Cheaper than Vonage for Unlimited Plan
+Availible International Flatrate Plans
+Free Western Europe calls
+Anonymous Caller Rejection
+Do Not Disturb Mode

Disadvantages
-Caller ID number only no name
-No separate voicemail phone numbers or website interface for vms
-My Lingo TA has disconnected and needed to be turned off and on again twice in the 6 days I've had it running.
- Had one report of an echo
= Voicequality is roughly the same on both
= Faxing works on both.

Vonage Advantages:
+ My Linksys Pap2 has run solid and stable since day 1
+ Website interface is better / Faster
+ Dedicated VM numbers and website interface

Disadvantages
- Slightly more expensive
- People tell me I sound quiet when I call them (not the case with lingo)
- No Anonlymous Caller REjection
- No Do not disturb Mode
- Simultaneous Ring works, but I can't call home with it.

It seems to me the failure here is really on the part of your cell phone provider and not Vonage. Vonage is just doing what you asked it to do, ringing both numbers. It is the cell phone company that is assuming that if you are calling your cell phone from your cell phone, you must want to check your VM right? Clearly if you wanted to check your VM you would have dialed your VM access number and not your cell number anyway. I think you should call your cellular provider and demand they correct this deficiency, after all you probably pay them a lot more than you pay Vonage.

It is interesting that our inclination is naturally to expect Vonage to correct this kind of issue. I guess it is probably a function of how little we have come to expect from the "traditional" phone service providers.

Well, personally, I can't think of ANY reason why when I dial another number from my cell phone that I'd ever want it to ring back to the number I'm calling from. Getting a call waiting indicator would be equally stupid / annoying. And other companies (Lingo at least) appear to do it properly. So I do fault Vonage, not my phone company.

Huh? Dialing your own number has been the standard method for checking cell VM from way back. Nearly every cell carrier uses it. Why would you expect cell phone companies to change a well established practice in order to meet the needs of a very small percentage of their users?

Noone is demanding Vonage implement a change. We're just pointing out a deficiency that they could and should fix. Their competition has.

Unless I missed it, did anyone suggest disabling caller ID from the cell phone? (*67) If there is no caller ID passed to Vonage from the cell phone, then no caller ID should be passed back to the cell phone, right?

I suppose this would work, but this would cause other problems. We rarely pick up any calls that come in without caller ID, as do most of the people we know.

The best way to 'fix' this is for Vonage to modify the code in their forwarding algorithm.
