Can anyone tell me if Vonage is available in Deep River, Ontario (613 area code)? I'm moving there soon and might sign up if it's available.

Thanks.

613 area code is a large one. I am in Trenton, and I can't get a Trenton/Belleville Number. Here are the cities that is covered in the 613 area code:
Kanata Kingston Orleans
Ottawa Ottawa-Hull Stittsville

If it is a local call to any of these places then you can get a number. I use Vonage with Cogeco cable but I am using a 506 area code, which means if my neighbor calls me it is a long distance call, but I have sent them a link to use to call for free using Vonage Me.

So, if I understand this correctly, I can get a number in the 905 area code (where I currently reside) and use it up in Deep River when I move, even though Deep River is in the 613?

If I want to call somebody locally in Deep River it will be a long distance call (which is no big deal since I would get the unlimited long distance plan), and if someone in Deep River wants to call me it will be a long distance call for them? And my friends back here in the 905 can still call me in Deep River and it will be a local call for them?

That is correct. My family back in Fredericton can call me for free since it is a local call for them. Plus, if you have family in friends in other larger cities there are what is called V-access numbers, they call this number and then enter your Vonage number and the call is free.

There is a new feature, but is still in the alpha stage. Vonage Canada doesn't have a clue about it, but it is called Vonage Alpha. You send family and friends an email with an html tag in it, then enter their phone number, their phone rings and then your phone rings you answer and the phone calls are connected. Once again this is a free call to them. It is counted against your minutes, but if you have the unlimited plan no big deal. Here is the link for that so you can have a look at it, also you can send out faxes without a fax machine.

I noticed on this page that it has Vonage talk, I haven't had much success with this in the past, unless they fixed it.

Just make sure you have a good internet provider, and if you have a DSL connection (Sympatico for example) you either have to keep your bell line or ask for a dry DSL line.

One other question I had; do I need a router with QoS in order to use Vonage?

Right now I have a Netgear FVS318 v1 router that's a few years old. It doesn't do QoS, unlike some newer routers, but it's been reliable and stable for me over the last couple years.

Vonage is giving a motorola wireless Vonage adapter and that includes a router. Even if you don't have wireless card in your computer you can use it as a wired router/adapter and now no need for your other router.

I went to Future Shop and bought the Linksys wireless adapter, when I signed up all they were handing out were wired adapters so I use that if I want to travel.

Who are you using for your internet provider? Do a Voip test to see where you stand.

QOS isn' a big deal unless you are doing a lot of downloading while on the phone. I use the Linksys wireless and do downloading and Vonage takes most of the bandwidth when in use.

I have wifi, specifically a Netgear WAG302 access point, connected to my Netgear FVS318 router.

I haven't signed up with an ISP in Deep River yet, but I'll probably go with Teksavvy's dry DSL service. I suppose if I'm doing lots of downloading I can always pause it while I'm chatting on the phone. I was thinking if I get Vonage I'll probably order the Dlink VTA, unless those aren't very good.

I would go with the Motorola wireless one they have on the Vonage Canada site, then it is one less unit you need to have plugged in.

You also want to make sure that company can offer dry DSL and what is the charge difference.

One more thing. I take it that if I'm using Voip then I don't need to use those DSL line filters with my phone, correct?

Not sure about that. Also with Vonage and other Voip companies you have to either plug your phone right into the Vonage adapter and use the phones with multi handsets or go into your phone box and disconnect the wiring.

I have all my phones plugged into the actual jacks, but I went into my phone box and disconnected the power to it.

There is a thread about it on here, not sure about DSL though.
