PostPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2007 7:48 am    Post subject: Buy Vonage equipment in Australia Reply with quote Back to top

Hi. I am currently in Australia and my Vonage equipment (Linksys Broadband Router model # RT31P2) blew. It smelled burnt and the power light would not turn on, so I know that the equipment is totally broken. I called Vonage and they said that if I go buy another Linksys broadband router they would be able to link it to my account and I could use my Vonage service. The only Linksys router that is available in Australia is the WRT54GP2, which I bought. When I called Vonage to connect it they said that that router won't work, and that it's not possible for me to buy a router in Australia that will work with Vonage service. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? It seems impossible that there is no way for me to use the router that is sold here with Vonage service. I will be in Australia for four more months and desperately need access to my phone. Please help!

Other than the soft phone account, the only way to use Vonage is with a Vonage branded adapter or device. If Vonage support tells you that these are not sold in Australis (even if the same unit that is not Vonage branded is sold there), then I would believe them and not waste a lot of time.

Your choices are to have a friend somewhere else (such as in the US or UK) buy a unit for you and send it to you, or you can sign up for a Vonage soft phone account add-on to your current account and then use the Linksys device that you just bought.

Thanks for the reply. What is a soft phone account?

A soft phone account is an "add on" to a regular account. Price varies depending on where your main account is registered (US accounts pay $10/month). This gives you 500 minutes included outgoing calls (not to other Vonage numbers, not to toll free numbers). Beyond that, the cost is per minute - same as if you go over on the regular 500 minute plans. Vonage to Vonage and Incoming calls are unlimited.

With a soft phone account, Vonage gives you the information that you need to use "any" SIP compatible device that you may have (assuming that it is not locked to a carrier).

In your case, this would likely be a waste of your main account, since you won't be able to use it without some sort of hardware, but it may be your best choice with Vonage for just a few months in Australia - or even for a temporary account until you get a new device shipped from someone who can buy one for you.
