PostPosted: Mon Jul 23, 2007 5:24 pm    Post subject: Need a new # & fax... do i want a new or 2nd router? Reply with quote Back to top

For more info on my previous issue... http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic20130.html

I have that settled for the most part..

Here is the new deal... and I have already emailed customer service and called. I just wasted time. I could not understand customer service over the phone. Besides that, they did not help. Also, I am sure his name is not Jack.

The emails were just links that often, did not even link to what they suggested.

I need a fax line and second phone line.

Should I get a 2nd adapter and use one line for new # and other line for FAX machine or can I get new adapter, use 1 port for current phone number and other to switch between phone/fax? I know I can send FAXes but I need it more to receive them.

Anywho... I am hoping someone can help. I am almost ready to just say the hell with it and drop this crap all together and go with Comcast Digital Voice.

I don't think I understand the question. You ask if you should "get a second adapter" or "get new adapter"... By either description you have two adapters. The bottom line is that you can have several adapters and several numbers and move the numbers around on the adapters as you please using your on line account.

Does that address your question?

Sorry I should have better explained. Maybe I confused customer service heh.

Should I get a new adapter... which would mean I get rid of old one. I'd have my current home number and one open port. My question is, is it possible to switch between phone and fax on that port?

Or second scenario... do i get a second adapter (keeping my old one with home phone on there) with a new number on one port, and fax line on the other.

That would get rather costly

Two $24.99 a month and the $9.99 fax line in that 2nd scenario?

If I understand you now, I'd go with this option. I assume that you'd need a new adapter because your current one only has only one phone port. Is that correct?

As for switching between phone and fax on one line, that's certainly possible. The biggest issue that people have with doing that is when they want to have both a voice message machine and a fax machine on the line and to have the correct one handle an incoming call. No one has published a way to make that work.

My current phone only has 1 port yes. If i do the new port... and use that 2nd port to switch between fax/phone, what happens if i have fax plugged in and someone calls? Will it go to my voicemail? Whenever I don't use the fax ill just unplug it and put the phone back in.

I would just leave both the phone and the fax plugged in to the jack. That usually works fine. The issue you're going to have is with voice mail. A fax machine set to answer automatically and a voice mail machine (be it local or supplied by the telco) are both automatic answering machines of sorts. Since you have no way of knowing what type of call is coming in, how do you get the right one to answer? If you don't need voice mail on the second line, then you have no problem. Just leave both the phone and the fax plugged in all the time and disable voice mail.
