When I signed up for Vonage service and plugged my Linksys Router from Vonage into my existing network I began to have problems with the Internet Connection. I have cable internet access and it seems that I lose my connection for about 5 seconds every so often when the Linksys Router is on the network. I noticed this was happening because when I try to download a large file it just stops, other things like instant messengers also go offline. I tested this without the Linksys Router on the network and everything worked just as it had before I starting using Vonage. No problems staying connected at all so I would have to say that the problem is the Linksys Router that Vonage sent me. Anyone have any suggestions for this? |

I am having the same identical problem with the Linksys router..... keeps dropping the net connections as well as the phone connection. Then seconds or up to a minute later it comes back on. I will be asking for an exchange now that I know it's the router that is causing it. |

what firmware do you have? 1.26.01 was supposed to fix it. |

This is far from fixed. How do you know 1.26 firmware was to correct this issue? Im on my third piece of junk. Two WRT54GP2's and now a new RT31P2 sent from Vonage. Just short of one day it crashed already. I'm running current firmware and case in point....same issue. |

Let me guess, Comcast is your cable provider & you live in the NE US? |

After reading these posts yesterday (because I have the same issues), I contacted Vonage, and they informed me that firmware 24 is what ships with all units, and firmware 26 only contains security fixes...... they applied it immediately anyway, and it appears that my Linksys router is not recycling/rebooting..... I'll keep you posted after the weekend to see if it fixes my problems......... |

glad to hear it binky. and markwi, read binky's post. that's one way I know. If you'll read this post http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2067.html, which I'm sure you're familiar with since you posted there, you'll see it fixed maaz's problem, and one can assume azreadyhough's issue as he never posted again (or maybe he disconnected his service). I find it difficult to believe the firmware has security updates, because if it was of any significance, everyone should get that firmware, which is not the case. if you look at this post http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12144209~mode=flat schja01 was told the primary fix was for mac cloning. this gives me even less faith that either tech ("security fixes" or "mac cloning") knew what they were talking about. now, I have no way of knowing if the firmware update is really what fixed it (possibly not as you say you have 1.26.01 and still have the problem) or if the techs happened to adjust something for those users without telling them. and for some more information that may serve you better, check out this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,11648806~mode=flat for the first few posts (about half the page) with taycounty especially. perhaps that's your issue. |

Will just add to the body of knowledge around this problem...
I've got a Motorolla SB2400 cable modem and a Netgear WTC624 router. I just added a Linksys PAP2 phone adapter to the LAN (by plugging it into the router).
Easy installation. Worked right out of the box. However, after about 30 minutes, I realized I was losing connections to Internet servers every few minutes. I know this, because I have FTP and SSH connections to a remote webserver practically all day. These connections were getting broken every few minutes.
At first I thought there might be some problem with the cable connection, but swiftly discovered it was the new PAP2. It was causing all sorts of grief with my router, breaking connections with my two computers every few minutes.
After disconnecting the PAP2, all problems went away.
It's unusable the way it is. Pretty disappointing!

My first purchase was the WRT54GP2 router/phone adapter combo a couple weeks ago. It had the problem of dropping the wireless connection every few minutes or so. It also had the background hiss issue.
After reading about all the problems people were having with the WRT54GP2, I decided to exchange it for a stand-alone router (WRT54GS) and phone adapter (PAP2). The PAP2 still had the background hiss (later helped by the off-hook phone2 fix), but the router has worked perfectly and seems to play nicely with the PAP2. I haven't had any drops at all. I have a constant connection to the internet sometimes when I have my instant messaging service on and it hasn't dropped once either. I can also install third-party firmware on the WRT54GS if I so desire which I'm not sure you can do with the WRT54GP2. I haven't used the phone a whole lot since my number isn't ported over yet, but the times I have used it there haven't been any problems with my router and internet connectivity.
It seems that the convenience of having the router and phone adapter combined has been overshadowed by the problems that seem to exist in the hardware/firmware. If at some point I have to replace the PAP2, at least I won't have to worry about the router end of things. Plus, the one antenna on the WRT54GP2 just didn't look right ... it is more comforting to see the rabbit ears. |
