The Audit my pc web site (http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp) shows my internet speed for Insight BB to be around 10Mbps download and around 1 Mbps upload which is what Insight clams it is but the Vonage test page on here shows around 1.5Mbps down and 112 or so upload. The Vonage speed test shows only one Vonage phone can be used. But the Audit my pc could have alot more Vonage phones. Which should I go by?

I'd try re-running both tests a few times and trying to run down the reason for the difference. Being a pessimist, I'd ultimately go with the lesser of the typical results.

I did a test today on this website for speed and it said that I couldn't have high quality phone service. So I checked the auditmypc.com website and it shows real good speed. So I made a call to my voice mail and it was perfect on high quality. So I am very confused about this but it seems like the auditmypc.com website may be more accurate.

The Vonage speed test has always been pretty accurate for me. My ISP offers several different speed tests, and being on their internal network should give the best estimation of maximum throughput. Running that test shows my connection at 26mbps down and 4.9mbps up. Vonage speed test says 21mbps down and 3.7up. The audit my PC test varies significantly what the other test results have shown by giving me 13.8mbps down and 1.6mbps up.

I ran each test several times to assure that the test results I got weren't just a one-off fluke result. Furthermore, I just tested download a very large file from a newsgroup and I was getting a sustained transfer of 22mbps over the course of the 5min download. I ran the audit my pc test again immediately following this and got the same results I did last time(13mbps down). This shows that for me at least the audit my pc test is wildly inaccurate and the Vonage test comes pretty close to getting it right.

So, what does this mean? Well, it just means that from whatever ISP you are using you have a better route to the auditmypc site, and form my ISP I have a better route to the Vonage test. It could also be your physical location, I am right near where Vonage is(NJ/NY area) and presumably where the server housing this speed test is. Auditmypc seems to be hosted by Verio out of Florida, so it would be significantly further away. Still, even that distance shouldn't drop the speed by 10mbps, so maybe my ISP just has a bad route or isn't peering with whoever provides the internet connectivity for Verio and maybe yours is. In closing, if Vonage is working fine for you there is no need to worry about the speed test results.

Thank you xcrunxc! I use InsightBB here in Indiana they clam 10 Mbps download thats why I thought audit my pc was right. Oh well!! As you said if I don't have problems I guess something is right.

It really does boil down to the network path between the test server and your PC. Distance increases latency (latency is more important than you might think), links can be congested, the path between you may traverse several networks which means additional points of potential congestion-- it all adds up.

A good way to see how distance (latency, possible congestion) affects speed is to use the Speakeasy download test. You can select from 8 different cities. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Being in FL, my best results are from the Atlanta, DC, and Dallas servers. Tests from Chicago and NYC aren't too bad, LA, SanFran, and Seattle are noticeably slower.
