I currently have two phone lines with Vonage--one main voice one and a second line used primarily as a fax. This fax line, because I ported the number as a standalone fax number, is costing me $14.99/month for 500 mins.

I'm wondering if I can change this to a virtual number, so to speak, and using a fax switch device, just have this fax # ring in on my main line and go to the fax machine. I'm looking to do this mainly to cut costs. I don't really want to keep spending $15/month for a fax line that's not used very much, and because its number is on my business cards, I can't eliminate it altogether for quite some time; hence my desire to just use a fax switch machine that will route incoming fax calls to this number to a fax machine.

This way I could at least eliminate the standalone line and perhaps pay $4.99/month for the second number rather than $14.99/month.

Anyone know if Vonage could somehow accommodate this? One option I can't yet consider is to eliminate this second line completely and have people fax my main # and have the fax switch route the calls. That may be something for the future, but not right now.

I'd try a few faxes using your main line first. FAX lines and voice lines are generally configured a little differently, and your FAX machine may be perfectly OK on a Voice line, or not...

Other than that, yes, I think you can keep a FAX number as a virtual number. There'd probably be a fee or two to do the actual transfers. Your best bet would be to call Customer Service and ask.

The standard charge, though, for a FAX line should be $9.95 a month, and include 250 minutes. You may want to call and ask about that - it sounds like what you may have is a second voice line.

My fax number when I ported it was a former SBC fax number--treated as a voice line, even though it was used solely for faxing. Vonage told me they could give me a fax number for $4.95/month, but it would have to be an entirely new number. If I wanted to port my old fax number, which I did, they'd have to charge me $14.95/month as a second voice line.

I'd rather now just use my fax # as a "virtual number" and have the faxes routed to my fax machine via the fax switch device.

As Nate indicated, there's no technical issue with doing this. The issue is whether Vonage is willing. Finding out will likely require that call.

transfer that number under their 2nd line promotion wherein you get 2 mos free of service and no commitmment. at first the number would be a voiceline and if its already in vonage's database have it converted into a dedicated faxline for $9.99 every month.
