I had a problem calling an 800 number over the Vonage network yesterday. I could call the same 800 number over a regular telco line. I'm in Michigan. So, I emailed customer care. Here's their response.
-- Dear William,
When a call is completed from your Vonage line, the call is routed to another gateway in another state and then to it's destination. This would make your call to that 800 number seem as if it is outside the calling region. Also since you can have your Cisco ATA in any physical location, it is hard to determine what the actual physical location is. What we would suggest is to request a direct number from the office for that 800. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. --
I'm in the DataCommunications business, and I understand 800 number theory. 800 numbers are inbound calls based on regional calling plans. There are instate 800 numbers, bands 1, 2, 3, 4 , and 5 region numbers. Basically bands cover several states up to the entire US market.
My original problem was that I called an InState Michigan 800 number. That means any call from outside of the State of Michigan is not allowed. Therefore, my call could not complete because the Vonage network has routed it nationally. Maybe one in ten attemps might make it, but why bother. If I am making a local InState call, my Vonage calling plan covers it.. So, I can just make it a regular in plan regional Vonage call .....
Hopefully, this can help others understand the technology of Data/Telecommunications. |
