I've been having the same problem. Cust service offered to replace it with a wired Moto router, still no software fix in sight. I surrendered and took the wired router, they claim it keeps the port forwarding settings at least. Then I'll just use a standalone wifi access point, the range on the moto was lousy anyway. Very disappointing.

Where did you find the firmware to downgrade ? Is the issue resolved for good. Mine have newer version, but sometime I lost config after reboot and sometime it's hold.

Welp, I went to add another MAC address to my list of "allowed wireless devices" and restarted wireless - it didn't come back up, so I pulled the plug. All my settings were lost.

More maddening is that I'm getting an error message trying to export my (now retyped) configuration:

"firmwarecfg: Internal communication error. Exiting. : Authentication error"

What a piece of CRAP.

I too have had the unacceptable occurrence of a power outage that resets all of Vonages Motorola VT2542 to the factory default settings. Anyone can find easily on the internet and get past any security. I have called a couple time to technical support to be told they haven't heard of this and that I can buy a different Router. The wireless router shows up as MOT and designator as the ssid so its not hard to tell its this motorola router The problem I would say is that Vonage Tech Support isn't knowledgeable enough to contact Motorola. I have seen problems like this in the past with routers and they are quickly resolved with firmware upgrades. I have had Vonage a several years, and this is the most significant problem I have had. I love Vonage, but the fact that so many people have this issue (you can read it all over the internet) and yet nothing is done speaks alot in itself. If I had the ceo's email I would write. Whoever signed the contract with Motorola, needs to call them and advise them there is a problem and I am sure they will address it. It's not rocket science.

I am ready to cry. I paid 120 dollars for this device to replace my linksys wrtp54g which had developed the exact same problem!!!

Don't let the Vonage first-level techs tell you they've never heard of this problem - I've been told both that they have and that they haven't. Insist on level 2 support (Holmdel, NJ). They can help. Failing that, perhaps a class-action?

Vonage can downgrade your fw.

I have been reading the VT-2542 "lost configuration" threads for a while now. I too have spent many hours on the phone with Vonage Tier 3 tech support about this issue which has been going on way too long. Like many VT-2542 users, tech support's suggestion and temporary cure was load the previous version of firmware to my unit which did not help.

Finally, one day I was messing around inside the menus and decided if the configuration couldn't be permanently saved, I would save the running configuration to a file so I could quickly load it back after a reset due to power failure or whatever. Taking it one step farther, once I saved the config, I then decided to load it back for the heck of it. Ever since I did that, I can now power off my 2542 for extended periods of time without it losing its configuration. Don't know if it's a fix or if it's just my unit, but it works for me. Go figure. Very Happy

In my previous post, I mentioned saving your running configuration to a file and then sending it back to the 2542. I should have mentioned how this is done for anyone not familiar.

After configuring your 2542, go to the TOOLS menu and click on Import/Export Configuration on the left panel. Next, click the Export button then Save. When you click Save, you will be given the opportunity to select the folder where the config.bin file is saved. Remember the location and click save.

After it has been saved to your PC, go back to the Import/Export menu and click Import. Again, a dialog box opens allowing you to select what and from where to Import by browsing. Once you find the config.bin file (or whatever file name you decided to save it as), click the Import button. This procedure will take much longer than exporting the file did, so be patient. My guess is, it's first erasing the flash memory before sending the configuration file which usually does take longer. Good luck.

John - glad it worked for you. I had no such luck - in fact, at this point, the export functionality is broken. I get the error message I posted above (something to do with permissions). When I imported a previously-saved config, the hardware went into an endless reboot loop. I had to hard-reset (paperclip in hole) the unit - and of course, I lost the config when I did that.

What I've noticed is that the configuratons hold for a period of time (days?), after which a power cycle will clear the device. You might want to wait a couple weeks and try the power cycle.
