I called Vonage today and they are RMA'ing mine and I'm exchanging for a D-Link VTA. I bought a WRT54GL updated with Tomato 1.07 and going to use the QoS there.

I'm tired of working with the 'all-in-wonders'. They usually are decent at one thing but suck at everything else.

I'm not impressed with voice quality on the 2542 and I certainly don't like the fact that everytime I reset I go back to factory defaults.

My VT2542, too, resets settings when powered off. My WAN setup requires a username and password for PPPoE. So, every loss of power event disconnects the VT2542 from the Internet. That makes my Vonage service practically unusable.

If anyone from Vonage and/or Motorola is listening:

PLEASE FIND and POST A SOLUTION ASAP!

Well, it's not any better even if it did reconnect...Your network would be wide open because the wireless turns itself on with no key. I never had to worry about that because my internal network addressing didn't match the 15.1 that the VT defaults to. However, I travel a lot and I had to walk my wife through reloading the config file and that was NOT fun. I've only had this thing a couple weeks and already had to deal with this multiple times...I'm done. I don't care if Moto releases a firmware update tomorrow, they can shove this piece of crap up their @$$.

Could you tell me the firmware version that's currently installed on your VT2542? The firmware or "Software Version" will be displayed on the Home tab when you logon into the device.

Here's what you need to do guys...

Go buy a WRT54GL - make sure it's the "L" model. You can get them all over the place for ~$50.00.

Then, go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy the Linksys PAP2 - it's also $50.00 but as of right now you can send in a $50 rebate so it's basically free.

Download the Tomato firmware for the WRT54GL - http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato and update with 1.07.

When you get the PAP2 - go to vonage.com/activate and go through the step-by-step on how to add a new device and move your service for your Vonage phone lines to the PAP2. Takes less than 30 minutes after you make the change for the phone to work. Very easy to do.

Setup QoS via Tomato firmware. Pretty simple actually, just enter the MAC address of the PAP2 and give it highest priority - keep everything else at default and it works great.

Plug the PAP2 into one of the LAN ports on the on the 54GL. It will get an IP address if you have a DHCP server running on your network (or you let the 54GL handle DHCP). The manual details the procedure to use the phone handset to 'dial in' to the PAP2 and have it give you it's IP address so you can connect to the web interface and configure. If you want static IP's...then, just go to the IP and hard code a static IP if you don't want to use DHCP.

The voice quality for me has never been better - I'm totally sold on this setup and wish that I would have just done this a long time ago. The 54GL is solid and with the Tomato firmware the wireless signal is stronger throughout my house and the amount of customization and functionality is well beyond what you get with the OEM firmware. The QoS is great as well - complete with real-time graphs that allow you to see what's using the most traffic - even down to individiual connections if you so choose.

So, for basically the cost of the 54GL you can have a very reliable setup with a ton of customization and you won't have to deal with the piece of crap 'all in wonder' boxes that can barely do one thing well - let alone router, wireless, QoS, Voip, VPN's, etc... What kind of quality are you really expecting in a single sub-$50 box with limited configuration optioins.

Anyway, just my $.02. Best thing I've done and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who is dealing with the 2542's. Vonage won't send you a PAP2 or DLINK VTA...they don't carry them anymore so you'll have to pick them up at a retail outlet but they are easy to find. I had a helluva time trying to get the 2542 to even work behind my 54GL. The PAP2 was up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Finally, sell or send back the piece of **** VT2542. My service has been up and down for the better part of the last two weeks and I got Vonage to credit my accout for a couple weeks of service.

Best of luck!!

what? you can save the configuration settings as a file and very easily reload them when the router croaks.

The better question is - why would you want to do that?? For me it was a total pain because the rest of my network didn't match their IP scheme so even when the router came back up minus all my tweaks...it wouldn't work. Actually, that wasn't neccesarily a bad thing because the router starts up with wireless wide open. I don't know about you - but I'm not a big fan of my router restarting when I'm out of town for a couple days and everyone in my neighborhood is checking out what's on my network...

I honestly don't know why anyone would keep the 2542. Send it back to Vonage and get something...anything else. This device is the biggest piece of crap I've ever used.

You are going to have much better call quality and a more reliable network with more ability to tweak and configure going with a dedicated router/wireless and then using an ATA device behind that. Plus you have a little fault tolerance there so that if either goes down, you still have something. If the router goes down...just plug the ATA into your cable modem and at least your phone will work...ATA dies...at least you still have internet access...
