I have a completely separate UPS to take care of my computer. That's a separate issue. The purpose of the UPS for my network is to assure that we don't lose phone service in an outage of reasonable length. It is, among other things, a WAF (wife acceptance factor). | I just looked at that model, and as it only has 3 UPS outlets (the other 3 are just surge protection), I'll either need two of them or get a device with at least 4 UPS outlets. (One for my cablemodem, VT2142, Hawking HBB1, and my living room telephone.) |
I certainly wouldn't pay for two. You can always plug a small power strip into the USP to get 4 low power units working with it. However, I would tend not the have the telephone itself plugged into the UPS. I always keep one, simple analog phone in use in the house for emergencies, and brief "power burps" don't bother cordless phones and such the way they bother network devices. |

I'd seen the advice of plugging in a small power strip into a UPS device but had wondered if that would have put too much strain on the UPS's battery. If I may ask, why not have my digital phone plugged into the UPS as well? I'm just curious. I could always buy a cheap corded phone that doesn't need to be plugged into an electrical outlet. (I used to have one but sold it when I got Vonage and had to get an expandable cordless phone system. |

There's nothing wrong with doing that if the phone base is co-located with the network equipment; in fact, it's a good idea. Mine isn't. |
