My RTP300 is failing after a couple years in service. It sometimes just starts dropping loads of packets and needs to be power cycled. What are my options? Can I just go out and buy any Voip router? Can I go out and buy any Voip router on a list of certain models? Do I have to get a router packaged for Vonage? Can I even get one of those since I won't be activating a new account? Do they have some kind of trade-in or replacement program? I emailed Vonage but haven't heard anything back yet... hoping someone here can fill me in. I wouldn't mind a router with wireless built in. |

Yes, you can just go out and buy one. And yes, it absolutely must be one intended for use with Vonage. Look for that on the box. You can probably get one through Vonage if you call tech support, but since your RTP300 is out of warranty, then just buying one would be easier IMHO.
Note that only the phone adapter needs to be specifically for Vonage. If you wanted to buy a separate router and plug an adapter listed with Vonage into it, that will work fine. The router itself needn't be a Vonage device. If you want one of the combo router/adapters, then it must be a Vonage device. |

Does your RTP300 still work with Vonage?
I'd go out and buy a wireless router, like the WRT54G, or any decent unit, and try relegating the RTP300 to Vonage duty only. That way, if it's just the router circuitry that's kaput, you still have your RTP300 serving up your Vonage service, and a new wireless router without Vonage is cheaper than one with it.
Worst case, your RTP300 still acts up and you go out and buy a Vonage-branded PAP2 and you have a separate router and Vonage device, which is (in my book) a good thing. I've been incredibly unimpressed with the quality of Vonage router combos as actual routers.
On the other hand, call the Vonage tech support line, and see if you can get a rep to replace the RTP300 for you. It's worth a try, if you've got the time and patience to talk to a half dozen people and stay REALLY polite and pleasant, someone may just decide that you're nice enough to do a favor for. And if not, all you've lost is time... |
