I am considering trying out Vonage but my local area code is not available.
I know this subject has been discussed before but I would like feedback from Vonage customers in regards to my particular situation:
I need some helpful detailed info. If I have to pick another area code and # on the other side of my state of Virginia, and I decide to call a friend that lives two houses down from me,will Vonage charge me for a LONG DISTANCE CALL since my "new" area code and # are located across the state?
Also I have read of terrible 24/7 phone support from Vonage.
Let me know how it really is folks!!!! =]
Everybody feel free to voice your opinions and suggestions on both my questions.
Thank you ,take care and Happy Fourth of July

All calls you make are local calls, but for your neighbor to call you it is a long distance call. I am in the same situation you are, no local number available.

There is a work around that though, if your family and friends have a computer you can send them a link in an email and they enter their phone number, their phone rings and they answer and your phone rings and you answer and you talk for free. Now the only thing with that is if you don't go for the unlimited plan then the minutes are charged against you since this is treated as a call transfer, normally all incoming calls don't count against your used minutes.

I am in Canada and I have used Vonage for almost a year and I haven't had the nightmare stories that I have read on here, but then again you usually only hear about the bad and the ugly than the good.

The one good thing about getting a new number is you shouldn't get any telemarketers, bad thing is you have to explain to people why you have a different area code, happens all the time for doctors and such.

Thanks roscopco!!!! Very Happy
That is good info.
I'm thinking about adding the Toll-free service for $4.99 extra a month.
That would keep my friends from paying a long distance fee everytime they call me. 100 min a month isn't much though.
I wonder If my friends and I used a softphone on the PC if that would incurr a long distance fee for the caller also. Think
PLEASE everyone feel free to reply with any useful help and suggestions.
I need more comments on Vonage customer support using the support phone number. I heard it is terrible.
I have emailed Vonage today with questions and have already recieved two personal responses. The email support seems great
Any RECENT(within the last 6 months) horror stories trying to get support over the phone? Brick wall
Thanks

Have your friends call on the toll-free, and you call them back.
Try and keep the toll-free call to one minute or less. (More calls for the fee).

I would suggest you calling Vonage and that way you can get a feel for their customer support.

Now about the softphone, in order for that to work you both need a Vonage account and the softphone is extra.

Now if you have family that lives in another state or city that has a local access number (check that out on Vonage.com) they dial the access number and then your number, but again there has to be Vonage available in their area. There used to be a toll free v-access number, but was canceled by Vonage.

Now about the toll free number you can have people call you on it, but then call them back since the call is free for you.

Heck, if I have my friend QUICKLY call me and then have me call them back I really wouldn't need the toll free service huh?
If I did that how much would my friend possibly pay for a long distance call to me that only took 5 seconds to do? Very minimal at best?
I'm not poor just cheap Embarassed

I used to just have my friend call me, and then I would see his number and call him back. He now uses the V-me service. Here is the link.

http://alpha.vonage.com/ with this you can also send a fax from your computer without having a fax machine, both are a good feature.

I guess it all depends on how much it cost per minute for your friend to call, remember they are billed by the minute. Most people have a long distance plan with their telephone provider unless they don't make any long distance calls.

With caller ID, you can have them call but do not answer the phone, and they hang up before answering picks up. Then they are not charged a long distance connection. You see the caller ID and call them back.

Thanks folks!!!
That has just about got me convinced to go with Vonage.
But I still need feedback from existing and previous customers how the customer phone support is? I could call them myself BUT I want actual customer testimonies!
Thanks for any helpful tips and suggestions

You only need CS when things go wrong, and like I said before I have hardly had to call them and when I did I had no problems.
