PostPosted: Tue Jul 03, 2007 12:09 am    Post subject: cable modem > linksys > motorola VT2142 and computer Reply with quote Back to top

Hello, I just received my Vonage package today and I am having troubles understanding how to set it up.

I have a cable modem > linksys > motorola VT2142 and computer set up and would prefer to keep it that way.

I can not access the motorola VT2142

From what I can read, I need to set up port forwarding on my router to be able to access 192.168.15.1, but I haven't found very good instructions on what the configuration needs to be.

Can anyone help?

I had the same set up and I didn't port forward anything to be able to configure my motorola. I guess you have a wireless linksys is that why you have it in use?

Your computer and your VT2142 are on the same network. Therefore, you need to do one of two things:

1. Simply plug the computer temporarily into the VT2142 on the (assumedly rare) occasions that you need to log in to it and make changes.

2. Set the VT2142 up so you can access it "remotely" (meaning "from somewhere other than the LAN ports").

- Temporarily plug a computer into the VT2142
- Log in, and set it up for "remote access" - I don't know a lot about the VT2142 but Vonage has manuals online for all of their units. Usually, the standard port for remote access is 8080.
- Make note of what IP address your Linksys has assigned the VT2142.
- Plug your computer back into the Linksys, and try accessing the VT2142 using http://[IP]:8080, where [IP] is the address the Linksys assigned to the VT2142.

Note that, if you use automatically-assigned addresses on the Linksys (also known as DHCP), the address of the VT2142 may change if you reboot it or the Linksys. To get around this, you may want to hardcode an IP address in the VT2142.

EXAMPLE: if your Linksys gives out addresses in the 192.168.1.x range, pick something in that range, but something that the Linksys is unlikely to assign on its own (192.168.1.200 might be a good choice).

Nate, why not limit the "x" range and then pick a value outside that range?

well, that would be the ideal. Have the router assign addresses that are in the 102.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100 range then use 101-254 for static addresses.

Most routers assign addresses sequentially, though, so for the vast majority of users, simply using .200 is a very safe bet, and doesn't assume a lot of knowledge about setting up DHCP assignment ranges.

I have the same setup, its quite easy to make it work.

Plug the cable modem into the WAN port of the linksys.
Plug the VT2142's Internet port into a LAN port of the Linksys.
Enable the Linksys dhcp server, its on by default.

Log into the Linksys router, look at the device list, you will see the ip address of the vt2142.

No ports need to be forwarded from the linksys, none at all.
Do not plug anything into the (LAN) 2nd vt2142, it is not used.

You MUST enable QOS in the linksys router, otherwise the Voip quality will be terrible.
