PostPosted: Mon Jun 25, 2007 1:51 pm    Post subject: Question about upgrading in router but keeping the WRT54GP2 Reply with quote Back to top

I have run the WRT54GP2 as my wireless router and phone adapter for a couple years now. We are moving into a new bigger home in a couple weeks and I am looking at upgrading in wireless router to the D-Link DIR-655 N router. Since I haven't had any real phone issues with the WRT54GP2, is it feasible to keep it as just my phone adapter and plug it in directly to the D-Link?

If this is feasible, let me take it one step further...we have a couple of Nintendo DS's and I have always rejected the idea of connecting them to my wireless router because I would have to downgrade the security to WEP. Assuming that I could use the WRT54GP2 as my phone adapter, would I also be able to set it up as just a WAP, so I could connect the DS's to it and only the DS's would then be on the downgraded security?

I hope this makes sense and many thanks in advance!

It's certainly feasible. Without the second part of your message, I'd have said to just turn off the wireless function and plug it into the D-link. Wanting to use it as another wireless unit complicates things, because you have the potential for interference. If the units can be set to use specific, non-interfering channels, it might be worth a try.

Thanks Steve for the info...I'll give that a try.

Its expensive, but you might also look at the Linksys WRVS4400N - a "Business" series router from Linksys. I'm using this router (just switched, in fact, from a D-Link DIR-625 for non Vonage related reasons). It seems to have good QOS for Voip and gaming built in, and a lot of nice features.

One of the neat things this router does is allow you to create multiple SSID and VLANs, or virtual LANs and set security independently. I have 2 SSIDs, one with WPA security and one with WEP security and it really is almost like having 2 completely separate routers. A device connected to SSID #1 can see and communicate with all the other devices on SSID 1 (and, of course, the Internet), but can't see or talk to anything on SSID 2 and vice versa.

This would allow you to do a WEP SSID and only connect the Nintendos, and do a WPA and connect everything else.

And then, yes, as Steve48 says, just turn of the wireless functionality on your WRT54GP2 and plug it into the new router.

Just another idea to consider.
