Post subject: Network Pair Splitter to RTP300 and Wireless Router
Hello all. Would there be a problem connecting a
Vonage
device (RTP300) and a Wireless Router (Dlink DI-634M) to a Network Pair Splitter that's connected to a cable modem?
Here's the Network Pair Splitter:

Thank you in advance.

Yes, I think there would be a problem, and here's why.
When you connect the cable modem to the wall, it communicates with the cable company and provisions itself, registers it's MAc, and get's it's IP. When you connect this splitter thing, you are now telling the
Vonage
device AND the wireless router to both fight for the use of the gateway IP. What you'll get is one device working, and one not, until the other one looses the lease, and the other grabs the IP. VEry messy, not recommended. In fact, I would connect your wireless router to your cable modem, then connect the
Vonage
device to your wireless router. Try that, see how it works, and let us know.

Agreed. And set QoS in the D-Link to favor the RTP300.

Thanks. I have tried doing this, but there have been problems with the phone (choppy calls, dropped calls, etc.).
Also, a
Vonage
guy came in and basically plugged the
Vonage
device directly into the cable modem and then plugged the Wireless Router into the
Vonage
device. The phone service is better, but now there are speed issues with our internet.
I don't want to deal with the trouble of going through the router's OS, so, I thought maybe something like an Ethernet Switch would solve this? Possibly?

As Dave said, this sort of thing can get you into trouble. You really don't want anything except a router plugged into your modem and servicing the rest of the devices. As you've seen, making the
Vonage
device that control router gives you good phone service, but the
Vonage
devices are not renowned for being good routers. That probably accounts for your internet speed issues with the
Vonage
box first. The normal solution is to put a good QoS router first, but that means getting it set up correctly. If you don't want to get into that, you may be stuck.
Keep in mind that nothing will overcome bandwidth problems. If your internet activities and
Vonage
requirments add up to more than you have, then all the networking experts in the world won't be able to help. The best you'll be able to do is to decide priorities.

try to connect your pc to your RTP300.that way your pc will directly connect to the primary router and the signal will not be divided.that is if you don't want to connect using wireless connection

The only problem would be that one of the devices won't work, won't even see a link signal.
The device you reference is passive. 10baseT/100 uses pairs 2/3. The "splitter" takes pairs 1/4 and connects them to pairs 2/3 on the second jack. They must be used in pairs.
They can be useful in saving running an additional cat5 cable to a location where doing so is expensive/inconvenient.
My experience is that they work fine with 10Mb but are problematic
with 100Mb
There was a big discussion about this down on one of the other forums where someone who sells these things was pushing them.
