Post subject: Motorola VT2442 retains the same IP address
Ever since I signed up for
Vonage
my IP address has stayed the same. When I remove the VT2442 and connect my SB5100 Cable modem directly to my computer I see that I am issued a new IP address. When I return the VT2442 into the connection I can't get it to sync up. It must be looking for the same IP address. So when I reset the SB5100 modem the VT2442 will finally sync up because it resets the IP address of the SB5100 to the same as it was before..
To try to make it sound more simpler.. It seems that the VT2442 will only accept the initial IP address at the time of installation.
Got any ideas of how to configure this?

No big mystery here. And good news that your VT2442 is not broken or anything.
Your SB5100 gives IP addresses at the whim of your ISP. Now 99.9% of Cable modems will only give out 1 IP address. Not only that but the IP address it gives out will be locked to the MAC address of the device that is connected. More than likely, you had your comp connected directly to the modem when you setup your ISP, so your PC will be able to pretty much get an IP anytime you connect it. However if you then try to plug something back in with a different MAC address, the Cable modem doesnt recognize it and thus will not issue it an IP until the Cable Modem is unplugged. This is why all sorts of troubleshooting documentation for home networks asks you to fully power down your whole network and start it back up first. Believe it or not this is a very common occurrence.
The VT2442 even has a MAC Override option in its configuration so that it will mask itself as your PC, if you enable this and enter the MAC of your PC, you'll see you wont run into this issue.

Thanks Alot!!! I downloaded the manual for the VT 2442 and figured out what you had described.
WAN setup for DHCP (Cable Modem)
Check box for Mac Override.. then enter in my Ethernet Mac address.
