As a new subscriber and reading this forum I was becoming a bit concerned about Vonage customer service.

We have been active with our transferred number only a couple of days and found our call waiting was not working. A call to Vonage this AM, resulted in a knowledgable and patient customer service rep. He took the time to explain at a high level it was a bandwidth problem, probably associated with the Linksys router in between the Vonage router and the cable modem. He made some adjustments on his end, had me switch to line 2 . . . problem resolved!

I am at this point happy with their response.

While Its good to hear that your problem was resolved, I can tell you right now you will definitely see more issues on your end with your Toshiba PCX1000 which is most like DOCSIS 1.0 and your old Linksys BEFSR41 router. Unless you see internet connection issues, I would Highly recommend not routing your Vonage traffic through that old Linksys. You will see choppy Audio, one way, garbled. you name it. Thats good if you have not noticed anything yet, but you should seriously consider getting some new equip next time some major electronics retailer near you has some big sale.

Thanks for your comments. I would guess if I put the Vonage Router in between the Linksys and the cable modem, I wold not need a crossover cable, is that correct? Do you think that wouldminimize any Vonage issues?

Yes if I understand you correctly, you would not need any special cabling like a crossover cable. And to clairfy before, while your ISP certainly provides a clean connection and ample bandwidth, sometimes you will see issues over the course of a phone call which to the modem is a sustained stream of media. The basic issue at hand is that the older modems operate in half-duplex mode, so they are constantly switching the perverbial gate back and forth while on a Vonage call. No matter how good your ISP is, the bottleneck is your modem so it holds sway over how good you perceive your connection to be. Normal internet surfing is mostly download so that really isnt an issue. The older Linksys routers have chipsets that were never tested against Voip so they tend to have issues. And to clairfy, this isnt an attack on the qualitly of the components being used, its just an observation of clashes between new technology and old technology. Unfortunately technology gets old real fast nowadays.

Basically, if you end up having no issues , GREAT!!!. But if you do, you may want to save yourself some calls into support and instead play around with your local network configuration or contact your ISP to see about an upgrade in equipment. Usually an ISP wont care about swapping out a very old modem because of increased competion for Broadband and the fact that they can then supply you with a new modem already tested against current and future "enhanced" services the company currently or intends to offer. Hope this helps.

Ok, taking your advice and having Road Runner replace the PCX1000. Their tech support people said the I would need a more current cable modem to support Voip.

I also put the Vonage device between the Cable modem and the router. Also liked the idea that the Vonage router will prioritize Voip vs. the data to PC's. Just needed to set some port forwarding rules for my remote access to my server, all seems to be fine.

Putting the Vonage device in front of the router resulted in a loss of a valid DNS address Cry , so back to the previous set up.
