I have never actually had a router before myself, but I have helped a number of people configure theirs. DC is a p2p program, I set up port forwarding (with dc you pick the port it uses, I happen to use 10850). But for some reason when I start it up an connect to a hub, both the internet and ethernet lights on the router go out, and I can upload but not download. The problem happens even if I use a passive connection.
I have had the same settings, ISP and cable modem (comcast) for more than 2 years and never had a problem.

On a side note, is there any way to change my ip now without completely disconnecting the router and hooking up just my modem, changing my ip, turning my computer back off, hooking the router back up and and continuing on my way?

Did you set up the port forwarding for both "TCP" and "UDP"? If you didn't, this might explain why you're only able to upload and not download. To setup port forwarding on this router your computer needs to have a static ip address. Did you set the computer to a static ip?

yes I did set it for both TCP and UDP and I assume you mean static internal ip- my computer is always 15.2 but should I turn off DHCP?

Did you set it to a static ip (192.168.15.2) in your network connections or is it set to obtain an ip address automatically? I didn't have to disable DHCP on the router.

If you haven't already, you may want to look at http://www.portforward.com for setting up port forwarding on the VT2142. The VT2142 isn't listed in the router selection, but the VT2442 is and you should use it as a reference guide for setting up port forwarding.

currently my windows network settings has it obtaining it automatically. That site was great, thankyou, but I did have it set up right. The really weird things is it is working for one hub but not for another.
It has nothing to do with how many hubs I am connected to, I turned everything off and disconnected the router then turned it all back on and everything worked fine. But when I reconnected the router it would not work again. Do you have any idea what that particular hub might be doing that the router does not like?

Also I really want to know about changing my ip with the router, during the above process I decided I would change my ip while I had just my modem connected, I even plugged the power back into the router, hit the reset button and turned it back off. But when I reconnected the router it had me back at the same ip address.

No, I do not know why that individual hub is not working...maybe someone else can offer some insight into this for you.

According to the port forward site, the VT2142 should be set to a static ip in your network connections for port forwarding to work. Before you make any changes in your network connections, make sure you write down your current settings in case you need to change them back. Reconnect the VT2142 if it's not currently connected.

In Windows XP, Go to Start / Run. Type in "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. What you're looking for is the "IP address" and the "Default Gateway"...IP address should be 192.168.15.2 and the Default Gateway should be 192.168.15.1. Now go to your Control Panel in Windows XP, Network and Internet Connections, Network Connections. RIght-click on the Local Area Connections and select Properties. Click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties. Select "Use the following IP address" --- In the IP address field type in 192.168.15.2---In the Subnet mask field type in 255.255.255.0---and in the Default Gateway field type in 192.168.15.1.
Next we want to fill in the Preferred and Alternate DNS Servers. See this link http://portforward.com/networking/dns.htm ---- Scroll down until you see the Comcast DNS servers and select the nearest to you. After all the fields have been filled in, click OK, OK and restart your system. Now see if you can upload and download using the p2p program.
