I'm looking to try/switch to Vonage. i have two questions:
1- If I like it after the trial 30 days or so, can I then port my landline number to Vonage, or does it have to be done at time of initial signup? does it cost anything?
2- If I would want to switch back from Vonage to landline, after i cancel my landline and had the number ported, can i switch my number back?
Thanks for your help,

You can port your number over at any time. There is a $9.99 fee to start a number transfer if it is not done as part of your initial sign up. Depending on who you speak with, you may be able to get this fee waved though.

Yes, you would need to contact your land line carrier to do this. The would re-open your account and initiate the number transfer from Vonage to them. Once your number is transferred back to the land line carrier, you would call Vonage to cancel.
Things to keep in mind:
- To transfer a number you have to have both accounts open(Vonage and landline) which means paying 2x the phone bill for this period. - Vonage will not cancel your account if you port your number out, you actually need to call them and disconnect your service, no matter what your new phone provider says. |

so the account would not automatically shut off after the transfer is completed? and if so why? i mean Vonage would no longer have the number thus service would no longer work? doesnt it follow that once other phone provider took the number service would be turned off as well? |

No, it would not be shut of automatically. Yes, the service would still work for outgoing calls(including long distance and international) and incoming Vonage to Vonage calls until you actually call to terminate. There has been much discussion on this topic on these forums, and that is just the way Vonage operates. A quick read through of their TOS shows that the only way to cancel Vonage service is to have the account holder inform them via writing or phone. |
