PostPosted: Sat Nov 20, 2004 4:20 pm    Post subject: Have low, steady static/hum on phone line - ideas? Reply with quote Back to top

Just installed Linksys PAP2 Voip unit. Is connected to a Netgear WGR614 router, then a Cable Modem out to ComCast. When I pick up the phone, the dial tone is crystal clear. After the first number is punched, get low volume, continuous static, and continues thru the call. Have tried 900mhz wireless phone, plan wired phone; moved the Voip unit away (8ft) from the router; placed power in dif location; turned off computer - still got the static/hum.

Anyone with ideas, or similar experience?

Call Vonage Tech Support, may be a firmware issue.

FH don't bother getting a firmware upgrade. that hum is a hardware defect. You will have to get it replaced.

If you ordered from Vonage directly then call up and get that box replaced.
If you got from the store take it back and let them know.

A firmware will not fix that issue, only a firm kicking in the arse of the person that sold it to you will!!!

I have the exact same problem!! I installed it this week, but because of Thanksgiving, this is the first time I have started to look into the problem.

I have same problem. When I pick up the receiver I hear a low static sound. The caller doen't hear it but I do, and it is very annoying. The phone operates perfectly when connected to a landline. I have tried isolating the Voip router from all other electronics to no avail. The same phone in the same position in the room operates perfectly when connected to a landline.

I am in my trial period, so I am sending mine back and just going to purchase more airtime on my cell.

Sorry Vonage, but it sounds like you got some more work to do.

Is everyone plugging their phone directly into the adapter? If you've back fed to the house but haven't disconnected to the local telco or have both Vonage and land line connected to the phone, that could be it. The dial tone supplied by your local telco is carryed on top of what is called DC battery voltage. Reverve polarity or different DC voltages can cause a problem like this. A low static hum is usually caused by one of the wires touching a ground. In older copper wired systems, wet wires cause this. Hope this helps.

My old phone system is disconnected. I have a wired cable modem that I am renting from Adelphia for $5 per month. I have purchased a wireless cable modem on EBay. When it arrives, I will return the existing wired cable modem to Adelphia. I also have Microsoft home networking. I have a new adapter for the upstairs computer, and will receive the new signal from the wireless cable modem, which will be 55 MPS versus the existing 11 MPS. If that doesn't work, I will return the router to Vonage. But of course I will call customer service first. I am trying to avoid the long wait times for customer service, so I am replacing other things that I can financially justify first.
