Please help! I used to have my cable modem hooked up to my Vonage router RTP300, which was connected to my Airport Express, and it was fine. Now I have moved, Comcast replaced the old modem with a new one, the Motorola Surfboard SB5120, and here are the issues: I can connect the Airport Express directly to the cable modem, reset it, and everything works great. BUT if I plug in the cable modem-->Vonage device-->Airport, I can get a sloooooooooooow to no connection; however the phone works. I have tried resetting everything, the Vonage support people have told me to change a setting in the Vonage router that basically deactivates the firewall, but then they say it only works if it is then hard-wired into my computer. That is not an option since I have 3 wireless computers in the house. Right after I reset everything with it all plugged in, it seems to be fast for a few minutes, then slows to a crawwwwwl, it takes minutes to load Google. There's got to be something going on with the Motorola modem (since that is the only component that has changed) or I'm missing something in setting the Vonage router settings. I've also tried cloning the MAC address, is that necessary? I thought I'd try getting an older cable modem again, but which one will work? Any ideas? Sorry for the super-long post, but I am desperate! Cry

Is it just slow to find a new web site, or does it remain slow after the site has been found? If it's the former, you may have a DNS issue. See Nate Hoy's discussion here: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/dnsproxy.html .

Thanks for that tip. I did disable the DNS, as instructed in the discussion, but no luck! Still, when all is hooked up correctly, I can barely get pages to load. It does seem *possibly* *slightly* faster, but not optimal for sure. Any other suggestions? Do you think a different cable modem would help? I read a Motorola discussion that says some of them work slower on a Mac--did I say I have a Mac? Thanks for your help!!

It's time to back off and see what's working and what isn't. You've already indicated that the phone works, but does it work well?

Temporarily plug one of your computers directly into one of the ethernet ports on the RTP300. How does it work in that configuration? If the answer is "not so good", run the forum Voip test and post the results here. Then remove the Vonage box, plug the computer directly into the modem, and re-run the test.

Hmm. Okay, this is interesting.
Here are the Motorola cable modem results:

Download: 5,657,544 bps
Upload: 1,588,656 bps
QOS: 99%
RTT: 88 ms
MaxPause: 21 ms

And the RTP300 results:
Download: 4,295,688 bps
Upload: 1,474,024 bps
QOS: 51%
RTT: 88 ms
MaxPause: 100 ms

What does it mean?

Hmm, both results are pretty decent, and even the difference between results straight from the modem and through the RTP300 are within the bounds of normal variation. I take it that a computer plugged right into the RTP300 doesn't work very well with the internet? How is the phone quality?

I decided I am ditching Vonage and getting Comcast digital voice, because at least I know that will eliminate one device, simplifying the setup. I really wanted it to work, but Vonage tells me it can't work wirelessly, and that is not an option for me with 3 computers throughout the house. The phone service has always been fine, but now I must choose to have good phone service and no internet, or internet and no phone service. I really appreciate your time and advice, but unfortunately I am moving on--I hope this is a good solution. Thanks for all your help! Smile
