Hi, My I recently had a thunderstorm fry my Vonage box. Tech support has said the box is not in warranty anymore so I have two choices: 1. Buy a brand new box from Vonage and then I would have to have a new phone number! 2. Buy a new box from circuit city or somewhere else and I guess I could keep my same number! I do not want a new phone number so I guess I will have to buy a new box. My question is I have a friend that has a box that he used when he had Vonage over a year ago. Is it possible to use his box? If so do I have to contact Vonage with information or just hook it up? Thanks for any help! |

I can't speak from experience because I have never activated a used box. From what I have read on this forum, it shouldn't be a problem if your friend properly discontinued his/her service. Paid any and all fees, the last bill and so on. On the Vonage homepage, you will see a link that says "Bought it at a store, Activate now." Click on that link and there is an option for current customers to add a device to an existing account. It wouldn't hurt to just try that proccess with your buddy's box and see what happens, so you can avoid the customer service BS if at all possible. If it doesn't work online, you can call them and try to add it to your account. Good Luck. |

In general, Vonage is reluctant to re-activate used Vonage boxes. You'll probably have to talk to customer service and have the friend verify that he has transferred it to you. Even then they may refuse.
Of course, since you're dealing with a friend, you can simply go to the website and try to activate it. But don't buy one on Ebay or something and take the chance of it not working. |
