PostPosted: Wed Jun 06, 2007 11:56 am    Post subject: Tried everything! BAD Choppy audio, Can't Run My Business! Reply with quote Back to top

I run a business and my phone audio is so terribly bad (BAD BAD BAD) that customers can’t hear me. It’s choppy (VERY choppy) and cuts in and out during a conversation. I am using the equipment recommended on the Vonage web site. I have to hang up and call from my cell phone, my secretary must hang up and call people back, use her cell phone, etc. This is VERY unprofessional and amateur. I like Voip service for the management features I have, but I need to either resolve these issues or go back to SWBT. Can someone offer a solution? Yes, I have run tests and my technobabble info is below.

Location: Austin, Texas (Cedar Park)
ISP: Time Warner Cable (Roadrunner High Speed) - Have called them and they are fine with Vonage and their systems are good.
Download speed is 2,900 kbs
Upload speed is 367 kbs
Modem is Ambit Data Model, Model U10C003/U10C004
Router is WRT54G with a PAP2
Network setup = Internet to Cable Modem to Router to PAP2 to phones.
Issues experienced; HORRIBLE Choppy / static-filled calls. Unuseable audio.
Voip Speed Test from Vonage Forum Site: NONE. Stupid thing sits with 'running test' for hours with nothing. Several days in a row (yes, my connection is working)
Yahoo Ping Test: 100 packets sent with 100 packets received. 0% loss Minimum 16ms Maximum 761 ms

PLEASE HELP!

Try testmyviop.com for a test

Also ping yahoo while on the phone, you should send at least 1000 packets for a true test.

See if your choppy audio coincides with packet loss.

Watching the Pings while on the phone I could determine my issue was the ISP because packet loss was occuring exactly when I had choppy audio.

My line would ping perfect for 100-500 pings, drop a few then be fine. Comcast changed my tap on the pole and knock on wood its been fixed.

Now if Vonage would just get my slammed phone number back I'd be much happier!

Ktroy,

I am located in Austin, Texas on Time Warner Roadrunner and experiencing precisely the same problem as yours. I have 4mbps downlink, 384kpbs uplink, and consistently garbled audio. In testing, the garbled audio is on my downlink only, the audio I hear. My uplink channel has clear audio. Problem has existed for greater than 24 hours.

This has to be a localized Vonage/Time Warner issue. As of now, June 6, 2007 1:23pm CDT, on the phone now (on hold), to try again with support.

Goaustin,

Hang up with Time Warner - you're wasting your time. I have called them as have other business-owners that I know. They claim that their systems are running fine with no problems, yet EVERYONE using Voip in this area (Vonage) has unuseable phone service. It's frustrating in that I'm paying a lot of $$$$ each month (and now losing more) for a problem that no one seems to have ownership of and which is claimed not to exist. I never knew I was going to have a 5-hour a week job as phone/tech support just so I could have a conversation with my customers.

I had the same problem in Fargo ND from late morning yesterday till about 12p central time. I practically ripped my network apart and then figured it was Vonage.

It has been stable since.

The one interesting thing was that it was download voice that was affected not upload. Being that if I ever had problems it was always me to other people (300kps upload versus 3mps download) I kinda wondered if it was Vonage. Now I can safely guess it was Vonage.

Perhaps not as safely as you think...

I've experienced this several times with Vonage over Verizon DSL. Running a variety of other tests (tracert, ping, Voip tests etc) reveals extreme variability in the first couple of hops. Still within Verizon network. Times anywhere from 30ms to 300ms.

Usually goes away before I can narrow it down further. Both test times and inbound voice return to normal.

In fact, while it's happening it's also quite noticable just using a browser with google or yahoo.
