I'm thinking of moving to DSL for the price. Here is what I want to do.
1.Get basic phone service for around $7/month. Naked DSL is aroung $50+/month. 2. I will not give out the new number. 3.Will I be able to use my house wiring to feed all phones once connected to Vonage?
I know if the non-Vonage phone rings I risk frying my adapter but I as I stated the new # will not be given out . |

1 - Are you sure basic phone is just $7 a month ? With taxes, fees, etc, I can bet is twice that much if any... I assume you want the basic phone service as an emergency backup...
Naked DSL for $50+ is a bit excessive - You might want to consider bundling it with a standard but basic phone server otherwise... Note that by having basic phone service, you might not need NDSL...
2 - No comment
3 - No. What you want to do instead is use a different pair of your house wiring for your Vonage phones, than from your analog line. House wiring (depending how old yours is) would have a minimum of 2 pairs. One would be use for the analog line and just on one phone (in your case for basic phone service). The other pair would be use for your house wiring and vonage...

This is probably true in terms of the actual charges from the phone company but as suave says, it does not include any of the additional charges which will minimally double that if not bring it up closer to $20.

This can be done if you have at least 3 pairs of wires. So for example, a cat-3 has 3 pairs of wires so you can use the first pair for your dsl, your 2nd pair for your regular phone line and your third pair for your Vonage line.
But this would require you to use a punch down block and make sure that only the 3rd pair is used for Vonage. It will require some work on your end but it is possible so long as you isolate that third pair from the other lines. |
