PostPosted: Sun Jun 03, 2007 11:23 pm    Post subject: No phone light, no access to WRT54G router IP Address Reply with quote Back to top

I've been using Vonage for the past two years with great results. However, the past two months have been incredibly frustrating! All of a sudden I no longer have a dial tone and my phone leds do not light. I have my modem connected to the linksys WRT54G router and from there it is connected to the desktop and Vonage adapter(PAP2). I can access internet connection fine but I cannot make any calls! There is no dial tone and the phone lights do not come up. When I hit '****' on the phone it goes to the configuration menu so i know it's connected but I don't understand why it suddenly stopped working on me! I have tried going to http://192.168.1.1 and other combination of the same (.15.1, 100.1 etc) but it says that IE cannot display the webpage.
I have tried rebooting in the proper order and it's still the same thing. When I tried reinstalling linksys, the router was not detected. My feeling is that there is something up with the router, that for some reason it is not connecting with the adapter but I have no idea how to fix it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated...I have been paying my Vonage bill for two months with no service and if this is not fixed soon I will have to cut it off. Thanx!!

Have you tried removing your router from your setup and connecting the PAP2 directly to your cable modem to see if the PAP2 still works? If after removing the router and the PAP2 works, then you know your issue is with the router. If the PAP2 doesn't work, your PAP2 is defective and it's time for a new adapter.

I have an internet connection where i have to log in to use it, so Vonage can only be accessed if i have the router and am connected to the internet (right?)....the thing is I took the router and adapter to a friend's. He hooked it up and got a dial tone right away. This whole thing started around the same time I started intermittently getting messages of 'limited or no connectivity' due to not being able to renew the ip address of the comp, after a few hours though I would be able to access the internet again...i have no idea if these two are related, and if they were, how can i repair it?

We know now that the issue is not related to your router or your Vonage adapter since you were able to hook them both up together and obtain a dial tone. So that would lead me to believe the issue is either related to your computer's network card or your modem. Let's start with the modem first. Disconnect your router and Vonage adapter and conncet only the modem to the computer. Are you on a dsl or cable modem? First thing to check is the ethernet cable connecting the modem to your computer. Does it fit snug and secure?

Next, Go to Start / Run and type in "cmd" without the quotes and click OK. This will open the command prompt. Type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. Now type in ipconfig /renew and hit enter. Then finally type in ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. This should solve your problem with the ip address not renewing and the limited or no connectivity if the modem has not gone bad. If the modem itself is bad, replacing the modem will more than likely solve all your problems.

Thanks for your quick response. I did as you suggested and renewed the ip address...so far no problems with no connectivity but the Vonage adapter is still not responding. I changed the wires and also tried the adapter alone at a friend's house where it worked fine. Could the problem be with the router? Is there a way to check if it is working properly with my system (since it worked fine at my friends)? Since I am not too familiar with the settings, I am reluctant to try anything in case of more damage being done! I am getting internet connection to my pc so that seems to be fine but when I try doing port forwarding or seeing the settings of the router, I cannot even access the ip address: 192.168.1.1 and when i run software a router cannot be detected by my pc. Is there a way to run a check on the router? Any help would be appreciated, thanx!

For now, disconnect the router from your home setup and connect the Vonage adapter to your modem. Do you get a dial tone?

Now, connect the router to the modem but do not connect the Vonage adapter to the router. Go to Start / Run type in "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. In the command prompt window type in "ipconfig/all" without the quotes and hit enter. What you are looking for is the "Default Gateway". Open your web browser and clear the address and type the default gateway address into your web browser. You should now be able to access your routers login page and adjust any settings that you need to.

Follow proper procedure of disconnecting the power from all devices on your network, including the modem before connecting the Vonage adapter to your router. Power up the cable modem first and wait for a couple of minutes for it to boot up. Then power up the router and wait for it boot up followed by the Vonage adapter. Do you now get a dial tone?

Thanx for your prompt reply.
When I disconnected the router and connected the modem to the adapter there is no dial tone.
When I typed 'ipconfig/all' I got a long list of entries. From that I assume that the one I'm looking for is the Default Gateway under Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection which is 202.164.128.1. However I tried to open this in IE as well as 202.164.1.1 and it still says that IE is not able to open this page.
I have changed all the wires, reconnected, and powered up in the order as suggested but still no dial tone Sad I'm inclined to think the problem is with the router, but then I am getting internet connection through it, just nothing else....Any help would be appreciated!

hi frstd_user, is your WRTP54G a Vonage device?if yes, try to access the web utility by typing in the IP address of the router at the address bar of the web browser. When in use admin as your username and password. Try looking for the button that has a label REBOOT or RESTART. This will restart your router's voice setting to factory settings. And also you want to do a hard reset. That is pushing the RESET button in the router. This way it will reset your router's routing capability to the factory settings. In doing a hard reset, make sure your router is ON,press and hold the RESET button for 30 seconds. You will know if it is restarting, because the power light will blink (maybe 2x or 3x, then pause).

What is the model of your PAP2?is it PAP2v2..old PAP2 doesn't have web utilities so you can't access their settings using a web browser. You can only access it's settings through the IVR.

After doing the reset, do a power cycle (or reboot your network, follow the proper rebooting steps). Attach your PC to your WRTP54G. Go to 'Start'->'Run'->type 'cmd'. key in ipconfig /all.Now look for the DEFAULT GATEWAY.(if you have reset it.The deafult gateway is 192.168.15.1).The ipconfig will also let you know if it has already accquired an IP from the router. Use the deafult gateway to access to its web utility, use admin as your username and password. Go to WAN configuration, enable the DHCP (if you have a DSL connection)..by the way what is your ISP??...after that go to LAN configuration. Enable DHCP also (or automatically assign IP). Change the router's IP address to 192.168.16.1. Then change also the start IP to 192.168.16.2 and the end IP to 192.168.16.254. and click SAVE settings. After that. reboot again your WRT54G.

After rebooting (make sure that the power light is lit solid). Check for dial tone and internet connection, if there is, then your routers good to go!.Now attach your PAP2. Make sure first that the power llight is lit solid. Since PAP2 is a stand alone adapter, you cannot put a PC into it just a phone. Then check for a dial tone..if it has..then your good to go!

The router must be connected to the computer to get the "Default Gateway" address. Was the router connected? The 202.164.128.1 and 202.164.1.1 are more than likely the DNS server addresses but definitely not the default gateway. Typing these numbers into the address bar of your web browser will not open any web page, let alone the routers login page.

Thanx for your responses, I really appreciate the help. I see the reset button on the back of the router, this is the one I should push correct? (I am hesitant to push it w/out confirming cuz if I do it and I lose my internet connection too...!)
Here is some of what I see when i hit ipconfig/all, i'm not sure how much to include as i'm not sure how much u need to know...:

from what i can tell, the default gateway is: 202.164.128.1 however, this is inaccessible and i'm not sure how to reset it. Should I just reset the router?
