Alright this is really starting to bother me already. I have been trying for the past day and a half to get this damn port forwarding going. I am using the Motorola VT2142. I have gone to the setup, done everything it says, even enabled DMZ, NNTP (that is what i want to open!) and still nothing!

I even called tech support, and they walked me through another option. i did everything the guy said. He told me ok, the port should be open. Well, nope it is not. I used websites to check for open ports, and what would you know, the port is still closed. i have literally tried everything to open this damn port. Nothing works! The port I want to open is port 119, and this is used for newsgroups. NNTP server. Yes, again, I clicked NNTP as an "allow" for this stupid router. I have absolutely no idea how to change this damn thing. Maybe the router is faulty? Maybe i need a new one? I don't know. I am getting really frustrated.

thanks for any help!

First thing I would do is disable DMZ. Did you set your router to a static IP? Go to portforward.com and follow the example for setting up the Motorola VT2442 for portforwarding. If you have any questions, post back and I'll try to assist you.

thanks for the reply.

Yes, i know what my static IP is and I typed it in and configured everything. I went to the website you gave me and followed directions for the VT2442, it is the same as the VT2142 which i have so thats good. I unchecked the DMZ icon as well. Did everything from the website, and still. Nothing! there is only 2 ports open. As my IT friend said. I have like the great wall of China for routers. This is getting bothersome already.

Sorry to hear it's still not working. Do you have the router setup for portforwarding for anything else? My reason for asking this is just to see if port forwarding actually works with the router or if it's just this one application that's not port forwarding. All I can say is double check all your settings and make sure everything is correct. I have a Motorola VT2542 and I've set up portforwarding and a home VPN server and it works fine.

thanks again for the reply

I double checked everything and still no success. I decided to restart the whole entire thing. Reset my modem, and adapter/router. It still says the port isnt open, BUT, i can connect through the port. Very weird. But im just happy it works now!

Thanks again!

Hello.

I try to use port forwarding on my Vonage VT2442 but it doesn't work from the internet. Here are the facts:
1- I wanted to broadcast my music playing on my computer to the internet
2- To do so, I installed Windows Media Encoder on my Windows XP home edition computer. It chooses a free port on my router: 2368
3- My computer private IP address is: 192.168.15.2
4- My router public IP address is static, provided by my ISP. 76.110.183.24
5- I go to the custom forwarding page and set it up for port forwarding using the following:
==Source IP Mask : 76.110.183.24
==Source Netmask: 255.255.255.0
==Destination IP Mask : 192.168.15.2
==Source Netmask: 255.255.255.255 (I cannot change that)
==Destination Port Start: 2368
==Destination Port End: 2368
==Destination Port Map: 2368

6- When I open Windows media player on another computer on my network, I type the following url: mms://192.168.15.2:2368, I can hear the music, so I can access the computer with the Windows Media Encoder playing music.

7- But, when I use the public IP address to access the same computer, that is: mms://76.110.183.24:2368, the Windows Media player returns an error saying it's a network error.

So, I guess that no computer can access my music computer via the internet, because the router blocks it. So, I guess that port forwarding is not working.

How can I make it works?

Regards,

I had a simular issue, I've been a Vonage customer for over a year and bought a new laptop for downloading movies... I couldn't get the port forwarding to work, but thought it was the laptop.

I hired a computer geek and he diagnosed the ISP modem was not compatible, when we updated I've been able to port successfully!
