Hello,
I just got my Vontage adaptor today. I installed in a system with an existing Belkin wireless router. There is good voice quality, until one of the 5 computers on the router starts downloading a file. With the Belkin router setup, I didn't see where I could give the Vontage adaptor any priority or QoS.
I'm wondering if I can make the Vontage VT2442-VD the main router just after my SDSL modem, and the Belkin F5D8230-4 Pre-N just a dumb access point, if that might work.
Thanks in advance!
Bob

You sure can, in fact, it's what Vonage recommends.
Connect your DSL modem to the VT2442, then connect the Belkin to one of the four yellow ethernet ports.
That's it - you're done! Just make sure you powercycle all the devices after you reconnect and reboot your PC.

Sweet !!!
It works great now. I made a call to an automated time / temperature number, and then proceeded to download two big files. The voice quality was perfect. I also noticed that this helped the delay. There's almost no latiency now.
With an existing router installation, all of the documentation that I saw said to keep the existing router as-is, and install the VT2422 like you were adding an additional computer. Althought this is the simplest install, at least with my Belkin router, there's no way to give the VT2442 priority and take advantage of the QoS.
Putting the VT2442 at the head of the line and everything else downstream, and turning the Belkin wireless router into a simple access point fixed everything.
Thanks again !!

Glad it's working the way you need it to. The big caveat on all of this is that if you're a heavy-duty internet user and have to have everything working optimally, then a good non-Vonage router should be first in line. The key work there is good, and the main router must have QoS capability to allow favoring the Vonage box. |

I'm not sure what has changed, but for some reason, my VT2442 is not prioritizing voice over data anymore.
I have the VT2442 upstream... blue cable going to my SDSL modem, and on the LAN side, a single yellow cable is going to my ethernet switch.
The voice quality is perfect, until i start to download files, then the receive audio is garbled. I ran the speed tests again and they were perfect. It did not do this about a week ago. I could hear perfectly while downloading big files. I'm wondering if there's been a VT2442 firmware change ?
I reset the VT2442 to the default settings and started over. I powered down everything.
My wife wants me to box it all up and send it back. Is there anything anyone can suggest that I try to get voice QoS prioritization back?
Thanks,
Bob
Edit: I found some information on a Zyxel X550 with good QoS. I might buy one today and put it upstream, the VT2442 downstream without any connections other than the POTs phone.
This is fun stuff !! |

Oh well... the Zyxel X-550 router with their QoS didn't help either. We have a high quality, 1Mbps symetrical link, and yet when we download a file, the VoIP phone is unusable becasue its choppy.
I'll be making that call to Vonage on Monday to cancel the service. Wish it had worked out. Its very high quality when there's no local internet traffic.
