I have a Linksys WRTP54G that has an overheating problem that they are known for in that it losses its ethernet WAN connection when hot; so what I need to know is if I can use it as just a phone adapter after my new Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Wireless router and if so do I need to change and or shut off any of the Linksys settings?
It may be replaced with the new Motorola VT2542 if they will do so for free; but I still might use the separate wireless router in front and it just as a phone adapter if possible! |

Your device could be placed behind another router simply by connecting the WAN port of the device to the router, without making any config changes.
But if the overheat problem is causing the WAN port to fail, then this would be a problem. |

No, what I want to do is come out of the cable modem into my new Wireless router, then go from 1 of its ethernet ports into the cable input of the Vonage Router but just use it as a phone adapter while pluging my desktop and any further devices into the 1st new Wireless Router.
I just want to use the Vonage Capable Router like a device out of my new Wireless Router strictly as a Phone adapter. |

My WRTP54G has been running as just a Vonage adapter for over a year now.
Option 1 in the below diagrams will give you a simple Vonage adapter, option 3 will make your WRTP54G work as a dumb switch in addition to a Vonage device (but if you are having overheating problems with the switch, probably not the best idea).
