Here is my problem. My apartment is over a garage. Between the garage and main house is a sunroom (all attached to each other) When the Vonage installer came he had to run a phone wire from the utility box to a wall in the sunroom where the wireless router for out comcast broadband connection is located. So he connected the phone adapter into the comcast router, then using 1 of the ports on the phone adapter plugged that into a wall outlet he installed by running that wire from the utility room. I want to add a fax number, but there is no way to plug my fax maching directly into the 2nd port on the adapter. My question can I put a splitter into the wall jack in the sunroom and run a 2nd phone line into port 2 to get my fax? It is impossible to run any wires from the adapter to my apartment directly do to the construction, Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most telephone wall jacks contain wiring for 2 separate lines- call them L1 and L2. If your installer did a normal installation using either cat5 or regular 4 conductor phone wire, you should be able to do what you want. However, you need to use the right kind of splitter. The type you want separates L1 and L2 into two separate jacks. They're normally labelled L1 and L2. A simple Y-splitter will not work. They may look the same, but the ports are typically unlabelled.

Plug the L1-L2 splitter into the wall, and run a line from L1 to the port currently in use on your Vonage box. That should make your phone work. Then run a second line from L2 to the second port on the Vonage box. You also need to make sure that the second line in the wiring is not connected to a land line in the utility box.

Thanks for the info, When the tech came he took some unused wires and wrapped them around the line. So if I understand you correctly I use the the special splitter that says L1 /L2 and connect the current wires for the voice number to L1 and plug into port 1 on the phone adapter, then I take the unused 2 wires and connect them to L2 and plug them into port 2 of the adapter. Now the wall jack that I will be using I should find 2 unused wires along with the wires that are already connected for voice. and switch the wires so they match the color of the wires that I used for L2/port 2. Does that sound correct?

I'm not sure what this means. Wrapped them around the line??

If I understood you correctly, the technician had to install a new wall jack by running a wire from the utility room. Right? If so, and if he did a standard job, there are already four wires (two lines) connected to that jack. Then he put Vonage on the house wiring by plugging the Vonage box port 1 into that jack. You enable your fax line on line 2 for the house wiring by plugging the spitter into the wall jack and then connecting Vonage port 1 to L1 and Vonage port 2 (the new fax line) to L2. You'll need a second L1/L2 splitter in your office to access the fax line.
