I have a D-Link gaming router (DGL-4300) and just about everytime we get a phone call the internet drops. Also, when you can actually make a call it either drops eventually or is so broken up its hard to hear.

I just got off with a tech support person and basically they had me put the Vonage router in front of the dgl-4300 and said have a good night.

This doesn't work for me, however. I want to actually use my $125 router!

I even told them I would prefer the dgl-4300 in front (because of all of the gaming features) and was ignored more or less. They said they would call back tomorrow to see if the problem went away.

I searched the forums here and found out the old version firmware (1.3) works best with the dgl-4300 and Vonage, but only for some people, and obviously not me.

Anyone have any suggestions?
I would like my DGL-4300 in front of the Motorola Vonage router.

Please give us details about your network, with and without the DGL-4300. I gather that the internet does not drop when the Vonage box is in front of the DGL? What Vonage box is it?

Im in New Hampshire using Comcast high speed internet. The cable modem is a Motorola SB1500. Behind that is the D-Link DGL-4300 router. Behind that is the Vonage adapter, a Motorola VT2442 - VD.

The internet appears to work fine with the Vonage adapter in front of the D-link router, but I haven't left it that way for any extended period of time because I'm not interested in having my network set up that way. IE, I don't really care if that works.

The DGL-4300 works flawlessly when the Vonage router is out of the loop, as does the Vonage router works flawlessly when the DGL-4300 is taken out of the loop.

The problem is, I'm a gamer, and the other computers in the house are wireless. If I put the Vonage router in front of the D-Link it effectively kills the usefullness of the D-Link. Plus, the D-Link has to be in the loop to provide wireless for the other computers.

Would I be smart to get a non-router Vonage phone adapter, or will that not solve any of these problems?

Hmmm. Strange. I doubt that getting another Vonage adapter that is not a router will help. The VT2442 is acting as a simple adapter when it's put behind the router, as you've done. Do you have anything plugged into the LAN side of the VT2442?

Please run the forum Voip speed test (drop down menu) with and without the gaming router ahead of the VT2442. Post the detailed results here. For this test, if you can, plug a wired computer into the LAN side of the VT2442. (You won't want to do that once you get this problem fixed.)

I assume that the gaming router is set up for DHCP. Is that correct? What address range is it assigning?

a couple of things you may or may have not tried with the Vonage reps. Gaming routers are notoriously rough on Vonage service. Turn off the SPI firewall on that DLink and DMZ the device. What most likely is happening is you get a call and you pick up the phone and the internet drops because the router sees all the SIP traffic and thinks that it is an attack (like a DDOS attack) and shuts down the internet to protect itself from the flood. Setting a static on the Vonage device and putting it in the DMZ or setting up port forwarding may allow you to not turn off the SPI firewall, but those cause issues with Voip.

if neither of those works then you probably have no choice but to Vonage device in front of the dlink another Vonage device will do the same thing the issue is not with the Vonage device it is with the DLink and the way it handles the SIP traffic most likely
