I was wondering why I have not had many customers callling today my wife called my cell informing me that if she calls the shop you get a fast busy.

I've had Vonage at home for 2 years and its been great.

Had it at the shop for 1 month so far and it has been a nightmare.

Vonage calls go through PSTN calls get fast busy, Vonage tech said he placed a ticket and it should be resolved within 2 days!

2 days without phone for my business WOW! that's service I'm glad I pay more for a business account Angered

UPDATE 2:

The only thing they can do is place a new ticket since there is a new problem, so they get another 24-48 hours to fix it Angered

If i didn't have printed material with my number on it I would be having a POTS line installed now

A few questions:

Was this number assigned to you by Vonage or did you bring that number over to Vonage with you from another carrier?

Do the calls still complete when dialed from your home Vonage line?

When the other person answers did you ever ask them if that was their correct number and how long they have had it?

I would be willing to be that the problem is that someone had that number with Vonage. They canceled Vonage and began the process of porting their numbers back to another carrier. In the meantime they never informed Vonage that they were porting their number so the number went back into the pool of available numbers. You were assigned the number a month ago, now the number has finally ported to the other carrier. Of course, this all hedges on it being a Vonage assigned number, if it's not then my thoughts are wrong and it could be a multitude of other things.

The number was assigned by Vonage.

I do fear what you descibe has happened as I have already have items printed with this phone number, newspaper ads, business cards etc.. this could turn out to be a bigger nightmare if I lose the number

I spoke to the person the line rings to. He did not speak english well from what I gather he did not know anything about my number. But then again I'm not sure he fully understood what I was saying.

Plus the number worked fine for 5 or 6 weeks prior I would have thought I would be in the clear but who knows

I would call the Vonage business office and tell them that you're ready to cancel if they can't get the service working properly in a lot less time than they're telling you. This isn't tolerable for a business account.

How long have you had that particular number? If it's only been a month and it has never been able to receive calls from non-Vonage phones , it seems that Vonage assigned you a number that was ported away by a previous customer or was given a bad number to begin with by their carrier, and in turn you received a bad number.

Unfortunately, this scenario does happen as numbers can be ported away by customers, and customers are in no way required to tell Vonage that they have moved their number to another carrier. When that customer cancels, Vonage assumes that the number is still with them, and then it gets assigned out to someone else. That person then discovers that calls from non-Vonage phones get an error message, or someone else picks up.

The other scenario is that calls from Non-Vonage phones to yoru number did work in the past, but recently stopped working. In that case it wounds like another carrier slammed, or in other words took your number without authorization, and assigned it to one of their customers.

If it's the first case, Vonage is going to need to assign your a new number. If your Vonage account is a business account, I think they refund any losses such as printing your number on stationary. If your are running your business off a residential account, I think your are S.O.L. Though, that is what I recall, don't quote me on it.

If it's the second case, and your number was erroneously ported away by another carrier, Vonage will go ahead and get the number back to you.

And now for some "edumacation" for the nerdy people out there who are wondering why calls from pstn don't work and why Vonage calls do when the number isn't with Vonage:

Vonage does not need the "physical" phone number to make calls out. In actuality, the only real use for the "physical" phone number on the Vonage network is to let non-Voage lines know where to direct the call so that it makes it to the Vonage system, and then Vonage goes ahead and forwards that call through the internet, through your modem, through the Vonage device and into your phone.

The reason Vonage to Vonage calls always work, whether the physical number is with one of Vonage's Carriers or not, is that Vonage to Vonage calls stay within the Vonage network. They do not need to go outside to a carrier for POTS signal translation, because they have the IP address of the opposite end they are calling and they know it's a SIP-to-SIP (The type of Voip signal that Vonage uses) call. Therefore they do not need a "physcial" number.

Theoretically, Vonage could have an entire network of people on it with out a single physical phone number. In this case though, only Vonage people would be able to talk to other Vonage people. Anyone outside the Vonage network would not be able to connect to a Vonage user. However, Vonage users would be able to make calls outside of the Vonage network.

I think I just pull a nerd muscle typing this Razz

Well here we are a week later still no progress....my number was "Slammed" and taken to a new CLEC "they will try to get it back" Rolling Eyes

Seems to me this would be illegal, to take my number away. I had it since March 28th.

Everyday I call, sit on hold, get India, give my info, get transfered to NJ sit on hold, give my info, rinse repeat. Sad

I get told they will email you in 24hrs with an update. Its been 7 days I have yet to receive anything. I checked my email address on the account as well as my junk folders nothing.

Maybe someone here has heard about these 2 issues

Issue #1, people do not know my Voip # they only know my regular home # that they have used for the last 5 years so I forward that # to my Voip. Occasionally I will notice my phones have not rang in a while, so I pick up my cell and call my house phone, it rings once and then instantly goes to a traditional busy signal (as it trys to forward to the Voip) and this happens off and on, I will try it and it will work, I will try it a few hours later and it wont. The entire time I am staring at my Voip and it definately isnt being used so there is no reason for a busy signal. This happened with my old Voip (viatalk) and I switched to Vonage thinking they would have better results....... I cant have the phone ringing busy on a business phone either....

Issue # 2 One out of every 8 times I call my Vonage line direct from another phone it has a fast busy ring for about 4 seconds and they screams an ear piercing screach and says call failed on my cell. Any ideas there?

Thanks to ANYONE who responds!

You're right it is illegal. That's why the FCC, or whatever organization that handles and upholds telecommunication rules, has put a measure in place. Companies have a certain margin for error where they can only slam so many numbers before they get fined for doing so. I'm not sure if there is a firm number of slams such of 50 or whatever, or if it's a percentage based off of something, like how many customers they currently have or ect.

This would seem like something the originating carrier issue, or in other words, the telephone provider you are making the call from.

The original carrier has a set of underlying carriers who handles calls out for each area you are trying to call to. depending on how busy thier first choice route is, you may be bumped to thier next in line route. It sounds like one of thier routes are handeling the call incorrectly. That would explain why you only get that fast busy and then screaming noise once in a while.

I'm almost 100% that's not an error message put out by Vonage. You're best bet is to document what # you called from and the # you called to(exact digits dialed), the description of the error you are getting (in this case, a fast busy, then the noise you described) and the time and date of when this happened and bring it to the attention of your provider.
